Electric blanket

My mother is looking for an electric blanket for a guest bed.

I think she would want a traditional electric blanket where you put it on top of the mattress.

I am not overly keen on this for the spare room because there is limited power sockets. There's only two and they are located on the opposite sides of the room and it will mean trailing extention cords around the room.

I looked online for something like a rechargable heated blanket. I didn't have much luck with that option. There might be something available in America.

Then I saw heated throws.

Does anyone have experience with a heated throw? I like the idea of a heated throw because it will be more versatile because like you would be able to take it from room to room if you wish. You could have it on the couch and then take it to bed with you.

I wonder what would the best option be?

Please help and thanks

Sorry OP I don't have any advice but I'm interested in the replies. I've been looking at heated throws for a few days now and they seem ideal, I'm hoping someone has a personal recommendation.

Electric under blanket is really good. Unlike a heated throw, it is designed to warm up both the mattress that you sleep on, and the bedding above it, so you climb in to an envelope of warmth both below and above you. And as heat rises from the mattress, it completely warms you once you are in bed.

Ones with double controllers (so that both users can select their heat setting) do have two plugs, but you can plug them both into a multi block adapter. Power draw for each would be under 200 watts per side, so this wouldn't represent a concern.

I'd recommend the Dreamland brand, they cost a bit more but they are the premium brand. There are lots of cheaper options, but they will be slower to warm up and tend to fail more easily. The Dreamland ones start warming up within 60 seconds, are safer, and will last longer.

Trailing extension sockets from the opposite wall is a no. I'd rearrange the furniture so bed is near the sockets.

As long as one socket is near the bed, you are fine. Use a multi block socket from that, and plug both sides of the blanket into that. With powerful devices (over 1kw) that power load could be an issue but electric blankets use much, much less power so you'll be fine.

Lakeland ones are the least bulky and best quality. Also they're on offer at the moment

I have a heated throw but I wouldn’t put it on the bed, it’s just nice to sit on the sofa under it.
We had bought silent night ones but I retuned the one we tried because it was barely warm, even on full heat, though the throw was nice and thick. The controls were also a ridiculous faff.
We now have ones called cosy home iirc. They are so warm, even on half temp, the controls are easy and the auto shut off works well.

We have a heated throw from Amazon which is great - can put a time on it and we usually put it on the bed to warm up an hour before bedtime but also take downstairs to the sitting room when it’s chilly but don’t want to heat the whole house with CH. cost about £25 5 years ago and is still going strong!

I have a heated throw from Aldi specialbuys which I mainly use in the sofa but sometimes pop on the bed when it's really cold.

It's nice in bed but because I put it on top of the duvet rather than a traditional heated blanket that goes under the sheets it does take a while to work through the layers and make the bed warm, and you have the wire which can get tangled if you toss and turn in the night.

I think it's ok for occasional use on the bed, but if it was for more regular usage I'd stick with a traditional heated blanket

I have the Dreamland one and it’s great. I do put it in my bed to heat the bed up before I get in but as it’s not specifically bed size there are cool spots remaining. It works for me though. I will probably purchase an electric blanket for the bed at some point too though.

I've bought this one from Amazon and it's fantastic. Our house is old, draughty and phenomenally expensive to heatso this is invaluable to snuggle up to & read in bed. Warms my bed up so I go to sleep feeling toasty & 1 turn it down to 1 or 2 before I go to sleep & it's on a 3 hour timer.

I have a heated throw, originally for WFH, occasionally use to warm bed up, spread out under the duvet then remove after about 10-15 mins. Think it is a cosy homes brand, bought via Amazon about 4 yrs ago. Bonus, it goes in washing machine too. Great buy, my mum and neighbour also have them

Went to stay with a friend in Scotland one winter years ago who lived in a vast high ceilinged ground floor flat which was once a mansion. Unbelievably cold! Snow outside. The heated over blanket was a complete lifesaver, it was that cold we'd never have been able to stay asleep without it. Getting into that bed was absolute heaven and very hard to leave in the morning, I think I got dressed in bed when I was there. So I think they're pretty good.

I have an electric blanket and an electric throw. The underblanket is much better than the throw for warming the bed.

I also agree with Dreamland but buy through Lakeland for a 3-year guarantee. Unfortunately my last throw was through John Lewis and gave up the most 2.5 years after purchase.

Actually we also have more electric throws in the house the teens like them but they are less expensive ones.
