How cold is your bedroom if your heating is off?

My boiler is currently not working so have had no heating in the bedrooms since Thursday. Downstairs we have an electric heater to make things bearable but my bedroom is now 14.5 degrees and it’s cold!!! I do have a warm duvet and quilt but it’s still too cold for me. My ideal bedroom temperature is around 18 degrees.

13C at the mo on the south coast of the UK. I always have windows open in the bathroom and bedroom no matter the time of year unless I have the heating on (which is pretty rare - probably about 10-15 times last year for a couple of hours on the coldest days), and even then they are opened again when I turn the heating off when going to bed.

WakingCliche · 22/11/2023 07:06

I do not know but it’s only ever been on overnight a couple of times. When DS was a baby it went down to -17 outside so was around that time. It was a record low for the area I live in.

Cricketbelle · 22/11/2023 07:07

Our kitchen is v cold so we have an oil filled radiator in there on a timer.

Definitely get yourself an electric blanket! You can get a dual one if you partner doesn’t like the idea (or just buy a single for your side).

Our bedroom is v cool but if you’re getting into a hot bed it’s nice and refreshing

Imamumgetmeoutofhere · 22/11/2023 07:08

We have our thermostat set to click on if the temp drops below 16 overnight and 18 during the day. It was on when I woke up at 6am so between 16-18 as it's still running

TodayInahurry · 22/11/2023 07:25

The heating is off in our house overnight and I always have a window open, probably down to 12 or similar

EBearhug · 22/11/2023 07:33

I'm another who doesn't heat the bedroom and sleeps with the window open. The rest of the house is usually around 16-17 first thing.

Ginmonkeyagain · 22/11/2023 07:37

Umm no idea. We had the heating on for a couple of hours last night and the thermostat read 18 degrees when I went to bed. But we never have the heating on over night, even in the depths of winter and we always sleep with the bedroom window open.

If you are healthy 14 degrees is absolutely fine, you will survive.

MarvellousMinnie · 22/11/2023 07:39

@junbean you're living my dream!

BrimfulOfMash · 22/11/2023 07:48

My bedroom was 14.5 when I woke up this morning. Perfectly happy sleeping in that temperature with a good duvet.

I put the heating on to take the edge off before getting up.

dianashilling · 22/11/2023 08:03

Without heating it would be around 8 or 9 degrees. The heating comes on twice a day and gets it up to about 15 or 16. Badly insulated 60s house!

I might have the weirdest answer. I live in a bus that's been converted to a tiny home and currently in the mountains, so it would be about -1 without heat. I have an electric blanket and a small electric heater so it's very cozy! One morning before I started turning the heater on I found some water frozen in the bottom of my kitchen sink. I know a woman who lives in a van in Northern Canada who has survived without heat for 8 years! I could never, I'm more suited for Spring or Autumn temps for sure.

This is the best weirdest answer I've ever read. How lovely!

napody · 22/11/2023 08:05

15 degrees, window ajar and two thick duvets on the bed. Much prefer it that way!

Gettingbysomehow · 22/11/2023 08:06

My bedroom isn't cold. My house is terraced snd well insulated. I couldn't bear to have heating on in my bedroom anyway. I just add blankets. I grew up on a farm and can't stand being to hot at night.

namechange1986 · 22/11/2023 08:06

9 degrees

Spendonsend · 22/11/2023 08:11

Ours is probably around 14 degrees with the windows open. It isnt heated itself, but we do heat the rest of the house to 17-18 degrees and we only open the window when we are in there, so i would say its surrounded by warm rooms during the day which must have a big impact on keeping it warm. It also gets a bit of solar gain.

When we had no house heating at all, the house sat at between 8 and 12 degrees in winter depending what the outside temp was and how sunny it was. A whole house that isnt heated for days on end gets a real cold feel to it which isnt the same as one where there is heat in the day.

Louloulouenna · 22/11/2023 08:23

Another one for no heating in the bedroom, just an electric blanket. We have an Aga and a wood burner and so don't turn the central heating on at all except when our children come home or we have people to stay.

Spendonsend · 22/11/2023 08:32

If you are cold op can you sleep downstairs until your boiler is fixed, with the electric heater? It doesnt really matter if lots of mumsnetters like a cold room, if you dont and it kept you awake, its not warm enough for you.

HelloandGoodMorningPlease · 22/11/2023 08:38

We don’t have heating in our bedrooms. I love a warm bed, but not a warm bedroom. We have hot water bottles and extra quilts and blankets. We are all adults though, so no little ones to keep warm.

MexterDorgan · 23/11/2023 00:42

Heating hasn't been on today and bedroom thermostat currently says 19c. Usually have a window open year round, but it's closed right now.

Terfosaurus · 23/11/2023 00:46

No idea. I hate having heating on in a bedroom (not that I have it on anywhere else either) and sleep with my window wide open. I'm nice and warm under my feather duvet. I'll add more blankets if i need them. The air is lovely and chilly.
