Should I get a bread maker?

Hello

I’m thinking about getting a bread maker. I don’t do too much cooking but we do make sandwiches quite often and thought this might be a way to make it easier, healthier and cheaper in long run.

Does anyone have one, are they any good? If so can we you recommend any models please?

I worry I’ll get one on impulse, never use it and it will sit in our cupboards for years Grin

@larkstar snap!
we have SD 2501 as well and make ciabatta every week - it’s firm favourite! DD also loves basic brioche. We buy flour at a supermarket, won’t have space for a 16 kg bag.
I also had problems with making rye bread a few times so gave up.

I don't put sugar in bread. The flour and warm water are enough to activate the yeast.

Mumsnet Sugar free Medal to you. I follow the recipes in the Panasonic book which came with the bread machine. Some have a teaspoon of sugar in, some don't . Hth

We've had a Panasonic for years and make bread about three times a week. I also make cakes from the Panasonic leaflet in ours quite a lot as it saves using the oven - the gingerbread, the cherry and marzipan, the fruit loaf and fruit cake, and I have managed to make lemon drizzle as well by adapting a recipe.

Google Panasonic bread recipes for ideas. Mine is around 12 years old, so out of date but going strong. It's an SD - 255.

There is a function for just dough rather than baked bread. Pizza dough, foccaccia...

I hate mine. The kneading paddle leaves a bloody great hole in the bottom.

Yes we have one. We bung it on every night to have it ready for 6 am the kids have sliced warm bread or toast for breakfast homemade and cereal and seem to love it. Daughter then takes any left over bread to sixth form to have to her freshly made veg soup - we make large batches and then she freezes - and does maybe 4 different large batches on weekend and freezes them. She heats them up at sixth form and everyone wants some!! I know it’s healthy …
would freeze it but it’s all gone daily but I only do a small loaf work out 30p with our electricity and bulk buying flour and ingredients and no crap. So very cheap. We even dry seeds from pumpkins etc or bulk buy but also poppy seeds etc love it - ours was £20 from Asda and it has a timer and everything

I asked for one for Christmas. I really start hating packed sliced bread and I am the only one eating bread in the morning at 7am so I can't bake myself.

We are currenlty looking at the Tefal Pain and Delices as it's a lot smaller than Panasonics and I have a tiny kitchen.

Whatincreaseplse · 22/11/2023 20:24

@Rocksonabeach what brand please was that a long time ago ago 20..

AutumnNamechange · 22/11/2023 20:34

I dug out ours after being horrified by the bread section in Ultra-Processed People. We use it twice a week at least now. It’s just a basic Russell Hobbs one but it does the job - we only use it for a basic sandwich loaf and it works perfectly fine for that.

Our bread maker did actually sit in the cupboard for years, but we are getting good use of it now:)

Great that they last so long! Do you have a special one to make focaccia or is that a standard thing?

Oh no! I have read things about the paddle leaving marks

Yes, getting a bread maker can be a great investment if you love fresh bread and want to save money. It can be a convenient and healthy way to make bread at home, and there are many different models to choose from that fit different needs and budgets.

Ifailed · 22/11/2023 21:11

You can make a loaf of Soda bread in less than an hour, including the time to heat up the oven. No holes in the bottom and it can share the oven with something else for the 30 minutes it's cooking.
