Please help!
Can you advise the best eye drops you use for dry eyes, I think mine are dry due menopausal symptoms.
I'm crying all day long, it's not glasses related as I tried changing glasses, and stopped I have also wearing mascara.

Following this. I have the same issue. Can no longer wear contact lenses. Opticians told me the best thing is a heated eye mask. I bought one but keep forgetting to use it! I find all the drops much the same, regardless of price.

seashaken · 21/11/2023 20:00

Hypromellose works for me.

thismummydrinksgin · 21/11/2023 20:03

Hydrosan extra, recommended by optician. Can use with contact lenses. I've used for 3 years now.

The optician also suggested to me the heated eye patch, that doesn't work well when at work though.. and to late in the evening.
I had tried the hypo san extra, but just seems to clog up my eye.
I have will try the Hypromellose..
willing to buy anything at the present, getting so much worse these days!

I feel your pain. The heated pads do work for me, in that my eyes feel itchier and drier if I don't use them for a few days. In terms of drops I've used all the different Hycosan but there is a purple one that is my preferred treatment now (intense). So it might be worth trying another strength. What I didn't find useful was the Hycosan ointment.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 21/11/2023 22:57

I use Carmellose which I get on prescription but it's available to buy
Blink intensive is another good one

scrivette · 21/11/2023 22:59

Keep trying with the heated eye mask, it's made a difference using mine and I try to remember to do it last thing at night.

ScaredSceptic · 21/11/2023 23:01

Theoloz Duo is the best I've tried. I don't do the heated eye masks and lid massage as I read some studies which suggest it can cause permanent warping of the cornea.

Pradder · 21/11/2023 23:04

I use hyoscan extra when mine are bad.
in general I use any preservative free drops, and eye ointment at bedtime. Must be preservative free as your eyes will quickly become allergic to the preservatives in normal eye drops

I second Theoloz Duo and it is what the hospital prescribed for me. Hylonight gel to put in at night.

I had the same problem and saw an optometrist. She told me that the main cause is the tiny glands on the eyelids getting blocked. Advice was to get two cotton pads, soak them in hot water and hold against the eyelids. Do this 5-6 times soaking the pads each time. Do this three times daily. This helps clear out the glands and allow lubrication. Follow this up with Hylo allergy drops and Hylo night gel. I have gone from sore, itchy dry eyes and constantly carrying eyedrops with me to having no problem at all

I also use Theoloz Duo as recommended by my optician. It's the best I've used so far.

I've had it for years, tried loads of things via ophthalmology

I've used celluvisk 0.5% now for some years - single vials so no preservatives and very close to natural tears
I apply celluvisk 1% if I wake in the night, and Xailin cream just before sleeping

Dr Hillary Jones (I know) heated eye bag - used daily for a fortnight, follow the eyelid massage technique and the eye wipes. Then just once a week. Do not over heat nor push on your eyes.

When I first started, I found a dry eyes forum which was so helpful. Not sure it's still going

Once you get into the routine, it's much easier to manage

Tilllly · 21/11/2023 23:22

Oh and get a humidifier

MaraScottie · 21/11/2023 23:24

Fish oils, look at something like Optase

GrandpaFlumpAndHisFlumpetIsBackAgain · 21/11/2023 23:25

Optiva, and Carmellose. Dry eyes due to PCOS, diabetes type 2 and Blepharitis. I use wipes for my blepharitis .

Catsmere · 21/11/2023 23:35

Another thing is cutting down screen time - easier said than done! - and resting the eyes frequently. I think it's a 20/20 rule - every 20 minutes, look off into the distance for 20 seconds.

Back21970 · 21/11/2023 23:36

If I skip a few days of my heated eye mask mine are terrible.

Hycosan drops quite good but seen Hylo recommended a lot on here so thinking of trying them next.

Boots eyelid scrub supposed to be good too.

I feel I spend a lot of time looking for product recommendations for this these days - it’s a really horrible condition that I was totally unaware about till I got it!

Does the cold weather make it worse as mine started about 2 years ago and seemed to almost disappear for a while but has came back recently with a vengeance.

I had Optiva on prescription but then had a new doctor who switched me to Carmellose. They both good but I preferred Optiva. It's expensive though hence them switching, I suppose.

Timetobookaholiday · 21/11/2023 23:40

I have tried the heating mask again tonight.. I had not thought of going to the drs for. Prescription, but it is so bad I might have to.

Yes less screen time would probably work. Will have to factor that in to

Get them looked at by optician and potentially eye clinic via GP. Find underlying cause(s).

Hygiene washes using baby shampoo
Heat (hot water in the shower at least) but heated eye pad is best
Hylodual, hylonight, viscotears. You probably need a prescription for these.

From a nurse with dry eye problems. I have chronic allergic conjunctivitis and blepharitis. Also going through the menopause but no specialist so far seems to think this is relevant.

It's massively relevant!
My ophthalmologist told me to get a vitamin A supplement and take flaxseed oil, when the menopause started - it's makes dry eyes worse

Boots brand are as good as the more expensive ones, and cheaper - the ingredients are the same.
