Gift ideas for 9 - 12 year old boy

user1471457354 · 20/11/2023 16:52

I've signed up to a charity pledge to buy a Christmas gift for a child this year who may not get anything else due to poverty/cost of living etc.

I have been asked to buy for a boy aged 9 - 11 however I don't have any children so I don't know what things they would like so I'm here looking for some suggestions.

I have been thinking about the below but happy for other suggestions! There is no budget but I'm happy to spend between £50 - £100 as I would love to get some things they would love!

  • Chocolate
  • American sweets
  • Lego
  • Pj's/ hooded blanket
  • Moon ball
  • Hot chocolate with mug
  • Prime drink?

I dont want to just get all practical things but some bits that they would enjoy.

Thanks all!!

Thanks for any suggestions!

where’s wally book

Squiggles23 · 20/11/2023 17:10

Have a look under the Christmas chat as there’s lots of discussions for that age group (it’s under fun and games).

I’m not sure on that lamp as you can’t ‘play’ with it and it needs electricity.

I think lego is great or a board game. Is it for a child in the uk or abroad?

user1471457354 · 20/11/2023 17:12

It's for a child in the UK - and we are allowed food/drink as long as its brand new.

Great I will take a look over there!

If you get lego, then maybe one of the 3 in 1 sets or a "mech" set would be good and not too themed. My 9 year old had gravitrax for Christmas last year and has asked for more bits for it this year - but that isn't cheap for a starter kit (£50 - £60). But is good for flexing his creative thinking muscles- it is an older kids version of a marble run you put together yourself. We are getting him a cyberhand this year (was about £30 in smyths toys).
Taco, cat, goat, cheese, pizza is fun game if he has someone to play it with.
Nerf guns are always popular - and loads of different priced options.
He got something called "project x" last year from grand parents. Is a game where targets are projected onto the wall and you shoot them with a laser gun. Can play on your own or against someone else - that kept him occupied for a bit

are you sure? that’s very unusual with allergies and also the impact of sugar on some

goodgriefsean · 20/11/2023 17:21

My 9yo has asked for one of those plasma lamps, also enjoys graphic novels, Dogman, Looshkin, Bunny Vs Monkey that sort of thing.

Cheerfulcharlie · 20/11/2023 17:23

Air-up bottle and pods?

My neices and nephews love GALT kits. Sometimes they are on amazon or Smyths cheaper. Maybe get 2 kits then something different.

just make sure that additional ingredients like bicarbonate of soda aren’t required!

Your list is perfect OP, some Bunny Vs Monkey books would be good, they are comic type books, a Beano annual, an Air -Up bottle and some flavour rings, a Rubicks cube and a perplexus ball are some other suitable suggestions.

What a lovely thing to do ❤️

art set?/paper/colouring book
wicked uncle has some sort of quirky gadgety novelty type gifts that dont require a "set"intrest..eg.. sonic boomerang, led gloves, worlds smallest voice changer.
sock s pjs for sure.
all in one hairbody wash
book voucher?or gift card
what a lovely thing to do.

SM4713 · 20/11/2023 18:14

@idealgift - Thank you, yes, that is something I hadn't thought of.

HalfasleepChrisintheMorning · 20/11/2023 18:23

I’d get a few practical things because if life is that hard they may struggle to get things for school.
A good water bottle, practical pencil case with folding ruler, pens, pencils, coloured pencils, pritt sticks, highlighters and Maths set- should be able to get all on Amazon who have some great Black Friday deals. Also a nice notebook.
Then get some fun things. Agree taco goat game- that’s in DS stocking and is on Black Friday.
B&M for a yard of Oreos, Pringles or similar if food is allowed.
Nice shower gel? Lynx
Beano annual would appeal to most boys this age?
Agree rubix cube/ perplexus type thing.
Cheap AirPod dupe headphones maybe but they may not have a phone so not sure on that.

idealgift · 21/11/2023 07:09

please recheck as i honestly don’t think food and drink will be permitted.

a handful of glo sticks are always a great little filler

user1471457354 · 21/11/2023 11:07

I have checked and food/drink is allowed. It is because it is a local charity so nothing is being sent abroad and additionally, we are not to wrap any gifts as the charity's check the items are suitable first and then they are wrapped.

Thank you to everyone for all the suggestions, I'm looking through these and adding them to my list!

Just to say that it’s likely that the bundle of gifts you give will be broken down and shared amongst a number of children. So whilst you are being very generous and thoughtful, your presents won’t just be going to the ‘child’ you have been given.

This might make it easier when trying to choose gifts to receive as ‘one present’.
