Your name

Do you like it?
Or do you curse your parent’s choices and think what the hell were they thinking?
Do you think your name dates you - perhaps you’re a Patricia from the 50s, or a 60s Susan, 70s Sharon or an 80s Louise?
Did your name influence your choice/s for your own child/ren?

I think my name is pretty neutral, probably considered a classic. I don’t mind it, and I know a lot of the shortened version amongst the school mums in my locality.
If I could choose a name for myself now, I like to think I could pull off something like Genevieve 🤣
What would you choose?

I don't like mine. I was named after a dog, who didn't have a human name. My siblings have nice normal 80s names so who knows why I got this one!

Are you happy to share it? I’m sure it’s not that bad

DreamingInPhosphorescence · 20/11/2023 20:51

Generically boring and dates me to an era. I don’t use it.

Hibernatalie · 20/11/2023 20:51

I think my name is dated.

I would like to be Lily or Jen.

I didn't call DD either of those names though.

To throw the spanner in the works - if you’re not an only, do you think your siblings got a better deal than you?!

I do. My sibling got a much more fashionable name.

Bigpromotion · 20/11/2023 20:55

I am called Rebecca.
I was born in the early 70’s and I didn’t know any other Rebecca’s. All of my friends were called Louise, Sarah, Tracey, Sharon or Nicola.
I hated my full name growing up, all my friend’s had short or one syllable names, so for most of my life I’ve shortened it to Becky but a few months ago, here on MN someone had asked if anyone liked the name Becky for a baby and so many said no but Rebecca was much nicer so I started to refer to my full name from then and actually really like it.
At 50, I eventually love my name and am glad my parents chose quite an unusual name for the time.

Floopani · 20/11/2023 21:02

I don't like my name, it is very American country music sounding when put with my middle name and is also very 60s, when I was born in the 80s. But I have lived with it.

DramaAlpaca · 20/11/2023 21:05

I love mine. It's a classic name that's unusual these days. I go by my middle name, which I share with my lovely grandmother, and it's heaps better than my first name which I detest and which nobody has ever used thank God My grandmother gave my DM a very unusual name which derives from Greek mythology and DM has always hated it, which I suppose is why I was given a mainstream classic name.

BlackLambAndGreyFalcon · 20/11/2023 21:07

@Northsideoftheriver is it a feminine form of John?!

Pthalo · 20/11/2023 21:12

Loooove my name, my parents managed to think of something unusual but not weird, that’s pretty. Strangers often say ‘What a lovely name’ when I introduce myself.

Quite lucky as my siblings names are boring 👀

TheSleepingGiant · 20/11/2023 21:13

I'm a Charlotte. Love the name and think it suits me. My parents also liked Megan and Hayley but went with Charlotte as it was less common at that time (1982).

remembertochangeback · 20/11/2023 21:13

I love my name. It's Scottish gaelic and whilst I did know a few others when growing up in the 80's, they were all from my parents home area, not where I actually grew up. However, it did used to annoy me when wee that I couldn't get souvenirs with my name on them!

But now my name has become really popular in Scotland. It's nice that people now know how to spell it, but I have to admit I did like how unusual my name was previously! And don't get me started on the folk who go "Oh, my cousin has called her new baby xxx, but she spells it xyz.".....well, that's not the same name then!

ArcticBells · 20/11/2023 21:14

Hate my name. It's typical of when I was born. I use a shortened version but wish I'd adopted a different shortening which I'd actually like!

RuppyDa · 20/11/2023 21:16

Mine is old fashioned , common in the 60’s/70’s, absolute HATE it being misspelled, love the elongated version which I sometimes get called.
All of my family were named after relatives - I had exact same name as an auntie and I loved that, I felt connected to her.
If I could have a different name I’d chose Grace or Vivienne

ladygindiva · 20/11/2023 21:18

I utterly love my name. It's classic and classy but not posh at all. It has loads of useable abbreviations but is not too long-winded to be used in full.

Quickredfox · 20/11/2023 21:22

I used to like my name until I read what mumsnet thinks of it (chavvy). Now I’m embarrassed to introduce myself tbh.

Quisto · 20/11/2023 21:24

I hate my name, it's a song, so got it sung at me for years, even though I was named before the song was written. The name was suggested to my mother by the midwife at my birth and my mother agreed (wtf). There was another girl in my class at junior school with the same name and I occasionally wonder if the midwife did a number on both of us. My middle name is worse, chosen by my then 5yr old sister. I also don't like her name, but at least my mother chose that. Only Americans seem to be called my name nowadays.

itsatravestyy · 20/11/2023 21:25

I’m a late 90s Chloe.

Always one of two in a class so never a fan, I wanted something more unique rather than being ‘Chloe Surname’.

It will probably date quite badly but now I’m older I like it!! It’s classic and has a bit of spunk. Also I don’t meet other Chloe’s as I’m in a job where everyone is a few years older than me.

I wouldn’t name any future children of mine anything in the top 10 though.

hertum · 20/11/2023 21:27

I don't like my name - it's an 80s name and there were always a few at school. My parents were new to the UK and chose what they thought was a popular English name, I suppose to help me blend in (and I am grateful that they didn't just give me an ethnic name from my country that would be unpronounceable and unspellable). But nobody is called my name nowadays, it's not a classic. I've considered changing it to a classic name (that my name could be a nickname for). But I'm in my 40s now and it would be too much faff dealing with the admin.

swingtowin · 20/11/2023 21:35

I don't mind my name - it's not too common, in that usually anywhere I go, there might be one other one and I don't think it's too dating - although not much used now. I much prefer it to my sisters slightly more dating name...

CH4NGEDN4ME · 20/11/2023 21:41

Hugely outing so name changed as in a regular poster

I love my name ☺️ I'm Eve 👋. Early 90's child, I was the only Eve in both my primary and secondary school and everyone knew me because of my name. Although Evie, Eva, and even Evangeline has become hugely popular ever since, I've still only ever, personally come across one other 'just Eve' IRL since.

Named after my nan whom I never got to meet so was a sentimental name to my mom. I love my name, thankfully ❤️

Imamumgetmeoutofhere · 20/11/2023 21:43

No, I don't love my name, don't hate it either. Just wish I had a more feminine name. In theory it's a unisex name but it is more commonly used in the UK for males, USA for females.

I've lost number of times I was put on the wrong PE list at school, or have my marital status changed to Mr on post.

ButterflyBitch · 20/11/2023 21:47

My name was more common when I was a kid, it's rare to hear it now in children. It's a classic similar to Elizabeth, which nowadays I am sure most people would say is boring. I like it though. I was always called the nickname as a kid/young teen but am known by my full name now which I prefer.

Wonkypumpkin · 20/11/2023 21:48

I like my name, it was incredibly unusual and and uncommon when I was growing up (1990’s childhood) and I could never find anything personalised in a gift shop, but it is now quite popular and fashionable. I know several people who have children who have my name.
I like the meaning behind it and that it is an Irish name in tradition to one side of my family.

SecondStarOnTheRight · 20/11/2023 21:58

I hated my name when I was little as it was too old fashioned and you could never buy things with my name on.

Now I like my name, I like that it's not common in my generation while also not "yoonique" (the people I've met with the same name closest in age are about 30 years older than me and mostly with a different spelling - mines the traditional spelling!).

My sibling is similar, never met another person of a similar age or younger with their name.

I don't think I'd change my name though now. I think I'd add to my surname if I had the opportunity to my mother's maiden name, or my grandmother's but not because I don't like my own, just that their surnames are extremely rare and haven't really been carried on in our direct line.

Bonjovispjs · 20/11/2023 23:16

I like my name, I was named after a song 😊
