Can anyone Italian translate for me please ?

My teen ds has a new job at an Italian restaurant, kitchen portering. They've offered him some food. He'd love a pizza which they've offered. But he's coeliac. They have gluten free base and he says they shout "no flour " and assemble them on a plate BUT then cook on the shelf in the pizza oven where the floury pizza is also cooked so there's a risk of cross contamination.
Could someone translate for me please :
I'd love a pizza please but is it possible to cook it on a tray as I get ill with even a tiny amount of flour because of the coeliac disease

Hes too shy to ask and doesn't think they understand that it needs to be totally away from flour. He can't have the pasta as it's cooked in a big vat of water where the regular pasta is cooked. I didn't " get" all this before he was diagnosed but now we know, we are really careful. He's been so much better since going GF and the odd occasion where he's been glutened, he's been really sick for days after. He could of course say no thanks to food but he's hungry and I think it's a shame if they genuinely don't know how to govern coeliacs an option when they've clearly thought about it and got stuff on the menu on offer. Thanks for reading and if anyone can advise or help with the Italian, that's great. It's a very authentic place and DS says the English isn't fluent in the kitchen (though he seems to talk fluent football with them all and they're kind to him 😊). Thank you!

Is it safe for him to be working in such a gluten laden environment?

Pollyparkin · 19/11/2023 20:38

He's washing up and not in food prep and has been fine so far though I wouldn't be keen on him actually producing the pizza for example and working with flour on his hands

As someone with a coeliac family member this is appalling to read - your son would be doing a massive public service if he could educate them on how to cook Gf foods safely without cross contamination

EmpressaurusOfCats · 20/11/2023 07:18

I’m only studying, not actually Italian, but this is how I’d say it - I’m sure some more fluent people will be along. Maybe it’s easiest if he writes it down & shows it to them?

Mi piacerebbe molto una pizza, per favore, ma si può cucinarla su una teglia da forno? A causa della celiachia, anche una piccola quantità di farina mi fa male.

Would it be worth ringing the Italian consulate and asking if they can find, and email you, information about gf foods and cooking for you to print off to give to the owner?

You can get cards in foreign languages that explain allergies - including customised ones (I.e. you can add in about the cross contamination risk).

I’m sure someone can help you with the Italian on MN, but the cards might be useful if/when he travels, so though I’d mention them - I only know about them as I saw a friend use them once and thought they were a good idea.

Is the restaurant giving all their GF customers cross contaminated food?
They need to change what they're doing for everyone who orders GF food, not just your son. He needs to let them know!

Hi op, he can use google translate on his phone and simply show them it.

LoreleiG · 20/11/2023 08:54

I find this astonishing to read as they will be serving coeliac guests too. Worrying.

WeeSleekitCowrinTimrousBeastie · 20/11/2023 08:56

Google translate app on his phone is the way to go with this.

It would be great if he does this and tries to raise knowledge of what they need to do to keep gf customers safe.

He might find this helpful. I am coeliac and travelling soon, I am printing them out in the language of the country I am visiting.
It is surprisingly common for pizza places to do this. A place local to me also offers a GF base but then whacks it into the floury oven with all the other pizzas. Another cafe near me used to have gluten free cakes but use the same tongs as for all the other cakes. The server was irritated when I asked her to use different tongs !
I find it the hardest aspect of eating out and it is the main reason that I sometimes get “glutened” after eating in cafes.

As a teen and new to working he hasn't the confidence to tell them what they're doing wrong but I might call them pretending to be a customer asking if they can cater for coeliacs and tell them what they need to do.
Hes simply chosen not to eat there and I think they want to provide options but need extra education.

Yes, it's understandable that he mightn't want to make a fuss a minute into his first job.

But if you could think of a way of educating them somehow it would be great. It's clearly badly needed. Their poor customers!
