Do you have a phone screen protector?

In the three years my son has owned his current phone, we've had to get the screen replaced 3 times. He is convinced that a screen protector is the answer, but I'm not so sure. I'm getting him a new phone for Xmas (Moto G73) so I've been tentatively looking at screen protectors too. However, Moto don't sell own-brand protectors for the G73 and all the G73 protectors on Amazon have poor reviews - either they don't fit properly, don't have camera holes, or shatter easily. I can't help thinking that if screen protectors were considered necessary and effective they would be easier to buy. But am I missing something?

Yes. Just got a new phone. First day into town to the mobile stall to get a case and protector put on. I do get the stall holder to fit the protector, think it requires some skill.

I always have a heavy duty screen protector on my phone plus decent case. ( I am dyspraxic AKA clumsy oaf so highly necessary!) My phone is 4 years old and is in pristine condition.

I always have a good case and screen protector on my phone. My last phone I got an all in one case for around £20 from Amazon when the phone was new and it lasted the whole time I had the phone (around 3 years). I got a new phone a couple of months ago and didn't want to take it out the box until I had a case and screen protector on. I got a deal on Amazon which had a silicone case, two glass screen protectors and two glass camera protectors although I've ended up replacing the case with a MagSafe one from Home Bargains after I bought a MagSafe pop socket for it (something else I swear by so I'm less likely to drop my phone).

I've owned iPhones for years and years now. I'm the clumsiest person ever and I've still never broken a phone screen. I've dropped phones on every surface you can imagine, bounced them off things accidentally, and my iPhone 4 (a good few years ago) once flew literally right across a room in a pub due to a dodgy handbag fastening and the only things I've ever broken have been the screen protectors (and I usually just get cheapy ones online or in Home Bargains/Poundland). They've probably saved me a fortune over the years.

croks · 19/11/2023 21:58

I had those ones in my basket until I read the reviews, which say they don't fit.

We got DD a new phone last Christmas, the screen on her old one looked totally cracked.
We took the screen protector off and I couldn't believe my eyes, the phone was totally fine. Best £10 I ever spent.

On the 27th we went and bought a new screen protector before she was allowed to use her new phone.

Do you have a phone screen protector?

I have both a case and an Ankor screen protector on my Huawei and the amount of times the screen protector has done its job is commendable. Yes it then has shatter marks but better that than the screen! I recently replaced it with another Ankor screen protector (mine came as a pack of 2 and had the first one on for years). Phone looks like new. The only downside if I had to stretch is that with the protector on I can't use fingerprint ID, but this honestly doesn't bother me. Facial recognition still works. :)

Janeandme · 19/11/2023 22:11

Yes it’s the first thing I do when I take a new phone out the box, put a tempered glass protector on it. Height of stupidity not to use one, they cost very little and do the job incredibly well.

Whoopsmahoot · 19/11/2023 22:12

An otterbox case and screen protector. Have never had to get a screen replaced and I drop mine a lot. 🤦‍♀️

A screen protector won't protect from drops on corners. They protect from small surface scratches (like keys in handbags).
I never use one, but always use a silicone case. I'm pretty careful with my phone, but even careful people drop their phones!

I've always got a screen protector on my iPhone and (along with a silicone case) it certainly has protected from drops, I've had the corner of the protector totally shattered and the screen underneath perfect. I buy packs of 5 for £15-£20 from Amazon so I've always got one handy if I need to replace it.

I have a Spigen case and film type screen protector on my phone. It is now over two years old and has been dropped off a horse and trodden on by said horse, as well as falling on to concrete from my breast pocket. Haven't needed a new screen.

Try a screen protector they are cheap as chips so very little to lose.

eurochick · 19/11/2023 22:26

Yep. I dropped mine on a gravel drive. Despite the raised sides of my otter box case the screen looked smashed. Nope, it was just the screen protector. The phone underneath was still perfect.

GetWhatYouWant · 19/11/2023 22:26

I have a moto and use a screen protector from Amazon. I also have a clear silicone case with corner bumpers and an edge slightly raised above the screen. Both have survived quite a few falls and saved my phone as I often seem to drop it.

EilonwyWithRedGoldHair · 19/11/2023 22:47

They definitely work. Our cat knocked my kindle ereader off the windowsill, it landed corner first on the screen of the Switch that DS had left on the floor, the corner of the kindle was damaged, the Switch screen protector completely shattered but the screen itself was absolutely fine. We very quickly ordered some replacements and keep spares in the house.

megletthesecond · 19/11/2023 23:00

Always. Screen protector and decent Samsung phone case. Same goes for the dc's phones.

milkysmum · 19/11/2023 23:06

Yep always. Both my teens have them also. Just buy the tempered glass ones off Amazon.

Borborygmus · 19/11/2023 23:43

Nope, I've never had a screen protector, I'm not at all convinced that they are necessary. All my phones have had Gorilla Glass screens which seem pretty tough. I've not broken one yet, or even had any light scratches.

RoseMartha · 19/11/2023 23:58

Always. And a case.

BertieBotts · 20/11/2023 00:06

Screen protectors don't protect the screen from cracking, they just prevent scratches.

To protect the screen from cracking you need some kind of shock protection, any rubbery ish cover that goes over all four corners will help here.

StBrides · 20/11/2023 00:12

No, I don't. I drop my phone often but the screen doesn't have a scratch. Those I know who do have screen protectors, all have broken ones. Then it's confirmation bias that they needed one, but a lot of tech experts believe that the risk of screen damage is greater with a protector.

Catsmere · 20/11/2023 00:13

I don't. I have a solid leather case with a magnetic closure, and I seldom have my phone out unless I'm sitting down.

I do have a screen protector for my iPad, but it was rather a waste of money, really. I wanted something to cut the glare and reflections, but it doesn't do that.

whatausername · 20/11/2023 00:18

Are tempered glass screen protectors easy to remove if you don't like them for whatever reason?

Just thinking if your son didn't like it or it was a poor fit then he could ultimately remove it, OP.

MorvernBlack · 20/11/2023 00:26

I have a glass screen protector and a silicone case with corner bumpers. The only time I've broken a phone screen was when I opted for a flip case with no screen saver, which fell open when I dropped the phone. I even have a glass saver on my Microsoft Surface (after a colleague broke their surface screen by dropping their phone onto it!)
At the moment I have the Jetech screens mentioned by a pp, but I've used other brands.

That makes absolutely no sense.😂

and for those saying they don’t protect from drops, they absolutely do, that’s their primary function.

Jimmyneutronsforehead · 20/11/2023 01:53

I feel the issue with it not fitting the phone might not be the screen protector but the phone itself.

I work in phone sales, and I'll be honest I can't remember the last time I sold a Motorola, I couldn't even tell you much about them without looking at the likes of gsm arena because I just never have to talk about them.

I suspect by and large they're not overly popular phones for a reason.

Manufacturer's put less care into the quality of products that they'll profit the least from.

Purrrrrdy · 20/11/2023 04:27

I'm a serial phone dropper. iPhones are so bloody slippery that I can't not have a screen protector
