How much do you hear your neighbours?

Just that really, and if you do, how much does it bother you?

For context, we are mid terrace and constantly hear the male half of one side who very much likes the sound of his own voice. It drives me nuts. OH is less bothered usually but raises his eyebrows when he really shouts and hoots. I'd have not voluntarily chosen to live in a mid terrace but I moved in with OH so no choice really. We will move at some point, but curious about whether I'm odd or intolerant. Feels a bit intrusive and just really irritating when I can hear the neighbour over our TV.

Is it unreasonable to think you shouldn't be able to hear someone hollering all day long?? He is also a champion door and cupboard slammer!

I live next door to an absolute horror. I hear her all the time even at 4am , she starts tapping on the bedroom wall. Hoovers at 5am whacking the skirting . DIY the other morning at 6.15am . She shouts abuse and swears her mouth off . Other month she charged at and headbutted my 73 year old mother.

We're also mid-terrace and have never really heard the neighbours, other than when we're all in our garden or when their dogs are barking...

noname846 · 19/11/2023 20:58

Ground floor flat here and rarely hear anything from the upstairs flat - only if they happen to move furniture around (which obviously is not a frequent occurrence). Never hear anything from the flats on either side. The last house I lived in was a Victorian terrace, and it definitely felt louder (I could hear the neighbours running up and down their stairs).

slavetothekittens · 19/11/2023 21:17

Mid-terrace here too. Don't really hear much unless the guy on one side is doing DIY or shouting. Only hear the other side if their little one is having a bit of a tantrum.

MinnieL · 19/11/2023 21:19

Never and I’m on the first floor of a block within an estate

Janeandme · 19/11/2023 21:23

I will one hundred percent guarantee they hear you too.

HundredMilesAnHour · 19/11/2023 21:31

I'm in a modern build flat and ever since the flat above me put wooden floors down, noise levels have increased massively. I can hear someone stomping around as I'm typing this. I hear them peeing, I hear them snoring (not very often thankfully) and I was kept awake by loud sex noises when someone brought home a one night stand (it's only been the once fortunately). I hear the constant opening and closing of doors. I get woken up by them getting up at 5am on a Sunday and going to bed at midnight (they work odd hours) and at times want to kill them because of how much they impact my sleep. I don't think they have any idea how much noise they make because they're top floor so have no-one above them.

We have newish neighbours and I may go mad. Never heard the previous people at all but these are incredibly loud. He has a loud booming voice and loves to hear the sound of it, I can hear him over my TV in the evening and if he’s on the phone I can actually hear what he’s saying. They seem unable to enter or leave without slamming the front door, then the car doors. They shout up the garden from inside the house, or out to someone in the car from the front door and their grandchildren run up and down on the wooden floors and stairs with shoes on, sometimes for hours. They also have extended family and friends round most weekends and sit at their dining table yelling and laughing for hours in the evening. It genuinely is causing me massive stress and I’m going to have to say something before I explode.

Crooklodge · 19/11/2023 21:33

Can only hear next doors blender if in our bathroom, or other side if they're drilling otherwise not at all and they're both hard of hearing so have their tv's blaring. 1960s grey box terraced house, we're having to move soon and I'm dreading it. Do NOT miss noisy neighbours in the slightest.

llamadrama16 · 19/11/2023 21:44

Never heard the neighbours in our flat. We're now mid-terrace and don't hear much of the neighbours but do often here their dogs! Suspect they hear a lot from us though as we're not a particularly quiet family 😳

KittensandPerverts · 19/11/2023 22:37

Older couple. Not much - many would swap but what I do hear sets my teeth on edge because in an ideal world I'd live in a cabin in a forest by a loch with no neighbours whatsoever.

Somewhatchallenging · 19/11/2023 22:41

I’m mid-terrace and never hear our neighbours on either side.

addictedtotheflats · 19/11/2023 22:49

1930s end terrace. I hear my neighbour yawn dramatically most mornings, her landline ringing occasionally and her plugging something into a socket on the adjoining wall and thats about it.

AfraidToRun · 19/11/2023 15:39

All the time, but as its mostly laughing I can't bring myself to be too angry about it. The rare parties do make my blood boil and puts me on edge though.

Yep this is like me. Parties can go on till the early hours and it's the screening women I can't stand..one day we will move and will be very careful where we go and what kind of property!

mondaytosunday · 19/11/2023 23:00

I live mid terrace. I only hear the toddler and little girl on one side occasionally in the afternoon after school - I never hear them in the morning. On the other side is a middle aged couple. He has quite a loud voice but I only hear him if he is in the bathroom when I'm in my adjoining bathroom and he's talking to his wife (not what they are saying or anything) or if he's in his office (also adjoining mine).
More sound in the summer when people are in their gardens.
It doesn't bother me at all - it's normal household sounds, not early or late.

Mejustme3 · 19/11/2023 23:06

We moved from a detached to semi a few years ago. We live in a very solid Edwardian house. Can honestly say that I have never heard any noise from our lovely neighbours. Not sure if they would agree about our doggie! She is very vocal when she has spotted the postman!

daffodilandtulip · 19/11/2023 23:39

Dog barks all day long, kid screams all weekend. And to think I was pissed off that I used to hear the previous owners washing machine at night ... take me back!

RoseMartha · 20/11/2023 00:08

I am in a flat. I do not hear the upstairs neighbours or next door. We hear people on the communal bit outside the front door if they are loud. Downstairs neighbours I hear the dogs sometimes.

Lovelycupofcoffee · 20/11/2023 00:57

Mid terrace house. The neighbour one side is very quiet but the other side is very loud and you can hear everything. Yep I mean everything. It’s the reason I’m now back in the office full time . I’m also thinking about moving in the new year .

Tundera · 20/11/2023 01:02

I'm in a twenty year old apartment block and hear very little. Downstairs has a toddler and sometimes I hear him jumping around but that's it. When my neighbours have folks round I only know if I'm outside and they have their windows open. It's great really.

I used to live in a Victorian terrace and that was bloody awful for noise so I do sympathise OP. I could hear everything there.

hoobanoobie · 20/11/2023 02:16

Mid terrace. I can hear next doors husband peeing very clearly from anywhere in my house. They shout and make weird noises in the evening, the only way I can describe it is "grito" like noises. Occasional very loud drilling. Never known to shut their front door without slamming it hard (from 6am).
On the other side is a 91 year old. She's deaf so thinks nothing of putting her bedroom tv at full volume at 1am, I can hear every word two rooms away on my side. She cant hear me banging on the wall. She plays Westlife albums now and then at full volume in the room behind mine or in summer, in her garden.
Two houses over have parties with music I can hear word for word in my bedroom with the windows closed. I wear earplugs and put a fan on to sleep and can still hear the constant bass thumping.
Can people just shut the fuck up?
I could very easily play my choice of music (industrial metal) at an extreme volume, but I don’t because I’m not a cunt.

We are in an ex-council small semi. We hear a bit of boistrous family noise in the evening if we don't have our TV on (like if a room full of people burst out laughing or if a teen is yelling) but we don't hear anything most of the time if nothing loud is happening or if there's enough background noise in our house to drown out next door. Their mum's morning alarm clock is just the other side of the wall to where I sleep and it's loud enough that I can hear it if I am already awake but quiet enough for me to sleep through if I am asleep. We can't hear normal conversation volume, hoovering, washing machines etc, but the previous occupant had an oxygen machine in their last couple of years which made a loud whir like a hoover and we used to hear that.

But no it doesn't bother me. It's part and parcel of living in a city that you are aware of your neighbours. They aren't doing anything weird or antisocial and they are quiet at nornal sleeping times.

ShufflingHedgehogs · 20/11/2023 06:19

Detached so never hear them.

Hear their bloody dogs barking all day in the garden though!

They just leave the door open and they run in and out barking at anything that moves.

floofbag · 20/11/2023 06:25

I've only ever lived in a end of terrace for 18 months of my life and that was our first house .
So luckily not much , it must be horrid and intrusive to have someone else's noise in your home !

We are about to move to our last house for a while and it's in the middle of a big garden .. I can't wait as although we are detached our gardens border our neighbours and that's enough for me ! 🙈
