Starting to feel the effects of having a nursery aged DC. I’m constantly ill every time a bug is brought into the house 😷🤧

I’m early 30s female, eat a varied diet (although no seafood of any kind), not deficient in anything specific as far as I know.

Constantly tired, skin & hair looking a bit dull, picking up every cough and cold going. Don’t currently take any vitamins or supplements. Went for a look in Holland & Barrett and was very overwhelmed by the options 😅 and a less than helpful staff member.

Where would you start with adding vitamins/supplements to my daily routine?

B,C & D is the best starting point if you are not anaemic. Add folic acid if you are anaemic.

B complex and multi vit , also omega oils 3, 6 and 9

I'd look at Cytoplan or Lamberts

Not H & B for vits

Also both Cytoplan and Lamberts give free advice (which you can ignore or adjust)

Don't waste your money. Most vitamins are "water soluble"(ie, you pee them out) some are dangerous in the incorrect dose. Vitamin D, helps your immune system and a lot of other things. Look up Michael Mosleys advice on vitamins. Don't listen to the hype.

Wellwoman is good for multivitamin/minerals, bargain on Amazon atm

I came on to say pretty much the same !
there is a lot of evidence that they are a total waste of money but this article sums it up well https://news.northwestern.edu/stories/2022/06/vitamins-supplements-are-a-waste-of-money-for-most-americans/

Vitamins, supplements are a ‘waste of money’ for most Americans

Northwestern Medicine scientists say for non-pregnant, otherwise healthy Americans, vitamins are a waste of money because there isn’t enough evidence they help prevent cardiovascular disease or cancer.k

It's good the Holland and Barrett staff didn't advise on vitamins, that's really for a doctor to say after blood tests.

Twitch45 · 19/11/2023 07:58

Vitamin D is a good place to start - especially at this time of year!

Destiny123 · 19/11/2023 07:59

C is good for preventing colds. I take the solvable 1000mg. Weak evidence garlic helps. Everyone should take vitamin d as I've tested about 100 patients and only seen 5 with normal range. I alternate between hair/skin/nails and multivitamins. I eat v well but am regularly deficient hence continue on multivitamins

Fifthtimelucky · 19/11/2023 08:24

I think you have a decent diet you don't need any additional vitamins - with one exception, vitamin D.

A few years ago my daughter had some blood tests for something and the results came back saying that everything was fine except that she was low in vitamin D but that we shouldn't worry because the vast majority of adults in the UK had a vitamin D deficiency and hers wasn't particularly low.
