WWYD - send to school not well or wait till a full recovery has been made ?

We’ve been sending dd in even if she isn’t 100% so a lot of days going in tired/ on Calpol / coughing / still on AB etc at the advice of school

However she’s just run down and catching more when not fully recovered from the last thing. I’m at the point where I’m wondering do I just keep her off till she’s finished her AB, is eating and sleeping properly again as she isn’t getting a break ??!

So far this term 15 days off - I can’t help feeling if I’d kept her off for long enough the first illness she wouldn’t have got this run down and would have missed less ! (Year R)

15 days in one term is a huge absence. Has she seen a GP?

Lilacdressinggown · 18/11/2023 20:38

I think I would listen to the school. They are fine to go back with a bit of a cough still.

Yes on 5 occasions (has needed 3 courses of antibiotics since September- ear infection, strep throat and then a chest infection) plus viral illnesses, she’s not sleeping well as has a lingering cough. Bloods all fine (with the chest infection we ended up in an and e). She’s just so run down now. We keep pushing her in and she’s needing either antibiotics at school or Calpol and nurofen and I feel like we are sending her but should we be ? Or does she need to get properly better

This is what we’ve done but she’s exhausted, coughing all the time, fell asleep in class one day ! Too tired or feeling unwell to learn much

How old is she OP?

Ibizabar · 18/11/2023 20:41

Keep her off. I would.

The kids burned out and clearly not recovering. She needs time out just as an adult would.

@Fullrecovery I certainly wouldn't rush to send mine back, hate seeing kids struggling when you know they should be resting. By R I presume she's 5ish? She's only wee and it will all be knackering for her anyway.

do what YOU thinks right, not the school.

Aturtleatemysandwich · 18/11/2023 20:43

15 days absence is massive, even for reception. I’d be seeing a GP.

This time of year they do just get sick a lot, if mine stayed off every time they were anything less than optimal they’d hardly be there. Mine are home for d&v, serious pain, things with an exclusion period or “too ill to do anything but stay in bed”.

Being tired is a ridiculous reason to keep a child at home, and coughs can linger for weeks.

Namenotavailableagain · 18/11/2023 20:44

I'd keep her off to break the back of it and get her back on her feet. The more you're ill the more you'll be ill

Fullrecovery · 18/11/2023 20:47

Yes she’s 5

Oh goodness me that's a lot. Shock I would definitely keep her off to rest and recover. She must be exhausted.

HBZ287 · 18/11/2023 20:51

Keep her off! She needs to recover properly and won’t really be missing much. How much would she learn / benefit from school whilst poorly anyhow?

Fullrecovery · 18/11/2023 20:58

She didn’t go to nursery or pre school so I think this is all a big shock to her immune system

I can’t believe people have to ask this! Your intuition is obviously telling you to let her recover properly so do it. She’s a baby at five and school is exhausting for them (not to mention a bug fest) at that age.
Health comes before everything in my opinion.
I’m an ex primary teacher and it used to bug me so much when children were sent in under the weather, it’s so mean.

You can expect the next 18 months to be like this then. Speak to school and see what they advise but personally I would keep her off, get a multivitamin added to her routine and let her rest

You're right it will be a big change being around so many new bugs and children. Did she go to any toddler groups before starting school?

PeppaPigStinks · 18/11/2023 21:05

One of my children had a bad infection and ended up with sepsis. He was very poorly.
It was this time of year - he was in hospital on bonfire night. after this he went to school part time until January. He went in the morning and I picked him up at lunchtime. The headteacher was not happy. But it was what he needed. It was enough to not lose too much school time but meant he could recharge in the afternoon. Would that be an option?

Autumnleavesarefallingdownagain · 18/11/2023 21:09

Oh bless her, I’d follow your gut and keep her off a bit to get fully well if she keeps getting sick. I’d also dose her up with Sambucol (I use the one with zinc etc) and some vitamin D to support her immune system. It’s probably a coincidence but mine don’t seem to get ill while they’re taking sanbucol. They were at nursery though, so reception not quite such a shock to the immune system

Yummymummy2020 · 18/11/2023 21:14

We are going through the exact same op! Been checked by the doc and assured it’s ok,nothing sinister, but it’s pretty much weekly illnesses now! We were told that she would be more vulnerable to infection when sick so I suspect every knock is partially to do with the last one, and also little kids are just germ spreaders! It’s so stressful though because I am due to give birth soon and am currently laid up with the latest bout of lurgy that was brought home, I suspect we are in for it for the year! I know the school tries to operate a zero sickness attendance policy but it dosent work. Some kids don’t have symptoms and spread stuff, some still come in regardless of being absolutely reeking and so the spread is inevitable! I’m just glad we avoided the recent bout of hand foot and mouth. I think you are right about letting her have a bit of time off to recover though, I really believe you would know best so if you think she will benefit she likely will!
