What's a nice wine for making mulled wine?

I love mulled wine. I use the sachets of spices.

I made a lovely mulled wine a few years ago but I can't remember the wine I used.

What would be a wine that will make a nice mulled wine. I like my mulled wine smooth and soft if that makes any sense. I don't want any sharpness or bitterness to the mulled wine.

Smooth and soft = Merlot. I admit I've never made mulled wine myself but, given all the herbs, spices and sugar that are added, I wouldn't have thought it makes much difference. Anyways, you shouldn't have to spend too much.

Have you looked online for recipes? This is the sort of thing that Waitrose and Booth's might publish.

Jam shed is lovely and fruity

Merlot. I use mead instead of honey because I’m diabetic.

I add orange juice and brandy to mine. Along with all the spices and sugar, the wine is neither here nor there so I use Sainsbury's house Shiraz.

You can use cheap wine, as you won't taste it with all the additions.

Get something without much tannin, something described as 'light'.

I agree with Jam Shed. I always use Jam Shed Malbec as it's really soft and fruity. Not sharp at all. It's also pretty cheap and usually on offer somewhere.

Envy@ Jam Shed - soooo sweet - we poured it down the sink.

I would go with a general Merlot?

RampantIvy · 24/11/2023 07:45

I find Jam Shed too sweet as a drink on its own, but I think it would be OK for mulled wine.

Fruity merlot

Oh I agree it's a very sweet red wine! A bit too jammy to drink on its own but perfect for mulled wine IMO.

Anything undrinkable that been lingering in the wine rack for more than a year is perfect. I certainly wouldn't waste a decent bottle. Your sachets are not doing the job if your mulled wine is bitter. A slug of brandy, a clove infused orange, several cinnamon sticks, star anise, brown sugar/honey... if you add your own spices you get get it just right.
