Does anyone drive a Mini Countryman?

I'm thinking about getting a Mini Countryman but not sure how it is in terms of fuel economy and space? I have 3 teens who are still growing... I tried the car out and it seems roomy enough but wondered how others have found it? Thanks!

Expensive on servicing and repairs.

It’s a while since I had one, but that’s what I remember most and that the ride was hard.

Tegroeg · 18/11/2023 21:03

I do and really like it. I have two fairly
tall teens and we find it roomy enough, although we have an estate car too that we use for holidays. The ride feels no harder than previous cars I’ve had but I don’t have run flat tyres, which I think have a harder ride. Mine is the all wheel drive as we live rurally on a single track muddy road that doesn’t get gritted, so I wanted that but also something that I can park easily in the small spaces in our local town’s car parks. I get it serviced at a local garage and it’s no more expensive than any other car I’ve had. I am planning to keep it until it dies but will then likely replace it with another one.

DW had a 2020 JCW, not especially economical but went reasonably well. Overall was a decent drive, she’d have another but only a JCW.

I’ve got used to it now - hated it at first! It’s roomy though, and it’s a nice attractive car.

I've got a 2019 All 4 Cooper S countryman and I love it. I had a 3 door Cooper S for 10 years and in comparison it's much more roomy, comfortable and has a great boot.

Servicing is every 2 years as I don't do high mileage and the last one cost me £400. Fuel consumption is about 43 mpg as I mostly do town driving.

Desperatelyseekingreason · 18/11/2023 21:20

I have the run flat tyres and find the ride very comfortable. My previous mini's run flats were extremely firm by comparison.

Gingerlygreen · 18/11/2023 21:27

I love mine, I get 38-40 mpg and it's all local driving, shop/school run.

Space wise it's very roomy, I have a large dog who fits in the boot (you can slide the back seats forward) and my brother who is 6'6" fits in comfortably.

It's fun to drive and handles country lanes really well.

@Summermeadowflowers can I ask what made you hate it at first?

I was heavily pregnant when I got it and I really struggled to be comfortable in it as I have to have the seat as far forward as it will go, but this meant my bump was wedged under the steering wheel which was really uncomfortable and I found it difficult in stop start traffic.

I still hate not having an ignition to put keys in as I keep losing them but that’s cars generally not the Mini.

I didn’t find connecting my phone to it easy either - DH did it. It’s a bit of a fuel guzzler too, but I’m weirdly fond of it now. It’s so much better now I can fit in it!

I’d say that’s pretty impressive fuel economy!

Ilikeyoursleeves · 19/11/2023 18:46

Thanks all. Can I ask roughly how much a full tank of petrol would cost?

Why would that matter?

alwaysinmyoodie · 19/11/2023 18:52

I have a Countryman SD its very efficient on fuel and roomy inside. However, parts and repairs are not cheap! Mine is 10 years old so things are beginning to cost on it.

alwaysinmyoodie · 19/11/2023 18:53

Forgot to add I get around 50mpg and I mainly drive country roads.

Agreed. Knowing that is no more relevant to the running costs than the colour of the paint.

Cantbeardarknights · 20/11/2023 20:25

Currently a full tank is about £70 and i get about 330 miles from it. I think that it\s very useful information

It is with the added bit of info, just knowing how much it costs to fill the tank is useless.

I love mine but there is only DH and I. Plenty of room for luggage and camping equipment. The only thing I would say is it's a bit underpowered. 1600 engine which is the same as our previous Mini Coopers (which went like the proverbial rats up drainpipes Grin)

Toomuchcawfee · 20/11/2023 21:03

Interesting. Thinking of trading our cooper for a countryman. Anyone owned both who can comment if they are very different with regards to fuel economy?

Do you mean a hatch to a Countryman? The fuel economy will depend entirely on your current drivetrain vs the one you choose in the Countryman.

I did mean a hatch, thank you. I just don’t want something significantly worse, but we have bad country lanes that are very poor in bad weather and I can’t help but think the countryman would be a sensible switch.

Thats what I guessed but didn’t want to just assume. Some PP got 50mpg out of their Countryman, we averaged 23mpg in mixed driving so that’s quite a big difference across the range. Also note the 4wd variants will be thirstier than the 2wd.

Letstrysomethingnew · 20/11/2023 21:36

Compared to my previous, similarly sized car, my Countryman is like a tardis inside.

Pros - good ground clearance, everything just works and is well thought out, big boot compared with previous car, great visibility, easy to drive, nippy.

I also have the 4wd option and comfort plus package and am pleased with both, although I don't dare use Parking Assistant that came bundled with it!

Con - there's a small fuel tank on the hybrid and the battery only has 35ish miles in it, so I'm forever filling up.

Pippu · 20/11/2023 21:41

Ds is currently looking at buying one. He's 6'4" so a mini doesn’t seem an obvious choice but in fact he had more headroom in that than in a much bigger car he tried out.
Service no more than any other car unless you take to a dealer. We aluse local garage.

I don’t agree, it’s a ballpark and very useful for me when i am buying a car.
