Looking for a London fine dining spot with good atmosphere

Hello!

My mothers birthday is coming up and I would like to treat her to a dining experience in London but I am struggling to find somewhere I think she’d like.

For reference, she didn’t particularly like Le Gavroche as she didn’t enjoy the atmosphere and found the food too pretentious. On the other hand she loved the atmosphere and food at the Ritz.

So I am looking for somewhere that serves good food and has a nice atmosphere. Eg she really likes live piano music and interesting architecture.

Budget not an issue.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I enjoyed Maine Mayfair. Food was good (probably not high end but good) but enjoyed the atmosphere - had a pianist/jazz thing going on. Think we ate in the Bistro . Good luck.

She might enjoy the Wolseley. Or Bob Bob Ricard?

SavBlancTonight · 18/11/2023 16:06

So she likes posh and buzzy rather than super formal?

What about The Wollesly?

One of the restaurants in the Oxo Tower? The bistro is busy but I always feel the furniture makes it feel a bit canteen like so maybe the main restaurant?

Is Clos Maggiore still open? That could be up her street.

Rules or Bob Bob Ricard. My heart will always have a place for Bentleys though. Bloody love it.

Brasserie Zedel
Claridges

We went to Gordon Ramsey’s restaurant at the savoy last weekend and it was lovely. The restaurant itself is tiny which really adds to the ambience - it probably only has about 8 tables and it’s a blind tasting menu but they will of course accommodate dietary requirements and allergies.

Does it have to be lunch or dinner? Because Brown's Hotel in Mayfair does an absolutely epic afternoon tea. Unlimited everything (just ask for more) and a plush but cosy luxury hotel vibe. Plus pianist.

Quaglinos had live entertainment when I was there recently - might appeal.

We love Rules.

It's heavy on game, though, so you might want to check the menu ahead of time. The ambience and service are wonderful.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions, I am very grateful! (Apologies I am making a roast dinner so haven’t been able to reply very quickly.)

@SavBlancTonight I am not sure how to how to describe her taste. Kind of traditional I suppose. She is of a generation that means she not too keen on anything that would be too unfamiliar to a British palate iyswim.

@Slidingsocks Can be either lunch or dinner :) Thank you for the suggestion!

@minipie @Hanlonsamazer Bob Bob Ricard is what I’ve been considering booking!

@Katrinawaves Ooo she is a big fan of Gordon Ramsay. Unfortunately she likes her meat close to well done so might not be welcome there haha 🫣

I am trying to expand her palate!

1890 probably not for her if she’s got very traditional tastes.

How about Galvin La Chapelle? It’s also got a beautiful setting (an old converted church) and the food is fabulous there too!

DarkRainyNovember · 18/11/2023 16:48

Rules... Extremely atmospheric, old school but friendly service we loved ir.

flagsrus · 18/11/2023 16:58

Murano in Mayfair. Or if that's a bit too ££££, try one of the Cafe Murano.

Love going here, it's so lovely

I found there was no atmosphere at all at Galvin La Chapelle, wasn’t impressed with the food either.

The Wolseley is laid back, food is traditional, nice cafe atmosphere.

I didn’t like the OXO Tower, it felt rushed and a bit stuffy.

Bob Bob is fun, but I’d say more of a place to go with friends than a romantic dinner.

Murano would be a good fit I think.
