So I moved into a victorian terrace a few months ago.
I wanted to do the hall for Christmas. There are layers and layers of thick, tacky gloss on the banisters and woodwork.
I set about using a heat gun to remove the paint which worked really well.
DH got home from work and said I should have checked for lead paint first, ordered some tests from amazon.
They came today and the scale is from orange to purple.
I think the test changed slightly. We debate over it a while but couldn't say it was negative.
There's just too much to do with paint stripper.
I've read if you keep the temp low on the heat gun and wet sand after, with maticulous cleaning after you can still use that method. With lots of ventilation and PPE
I can't leave it now as its half done.
My plan was to sand back and then use matt black frenchic.
I couldn't do that straight over the layers. The gloss layers are so thick. The spindles look like melting candles.
