Ring doorbells

The people we bought our house from had a Ring doorbell which they’ve taken with them, so we currently have no doorbell. There are also three little cameras high up on various parts of the outside of the house and Ring stickers on the windows, which seems a bit OTT given the low crime levels but I guess it’s a deterrent.

As it’s Black Friday and the deals for Ring cameras are good on Amazon, we are looking at them but I don’t know anything about them! There are four holes with rawl plugs in by the door where the old one was - does this mean we need a wired one, or a wireless one? Will it just connect to the other cameras or have they left those behind because they know they’re useless without the original set up?

Any guidance gratefully received!

I have a Ring doorbell but am too mean to pay for the account which allows you to watch back videos etc. So real time only. Ours fitted on the front door and replaced the spyhole. It is battery, no wires. It must be wireless to connect to the app.

I also find I get logged out of the app very easily - so courier rings, by the time I log back on to say put it round the back please he has moved on and delivered another 10 parcels.

I am not a huge fan!!

And your 3 cameras - I think they were too high up to remove easily which is why they were left!

I think you’re right about the cameras just being too much of a job to take down. They were still in the house packing when we arrived on completion day so it probably wasn’t top priority!

I hate CCTV and household private video surveillance doesn't feel right. I know it reassures lots of people , but my issue is the world we are expecting children to grow up in is now almost completely under some sort of lense. What effect is this having? Mostly the footage from them is useless anyway if anything does happen. Take them down. Buy quality patio locks instead if you want to be more secure.

Same as this for us, but I don’t find we get logged out - it works fine, and I can talk to couriers etc if needed. I really like it, as a video doorbell that you can hear anywhere in the house cos it rings your phone as well as the chimes / ringer units. And nb that as well - you need the doorbell and at least one “chime” that makes the ringing sound when it goes off. We have two.

We don’t have any cameras etc.

I have Eufy doorbell it's more or less the same as Ring but there's no monthly subscription fee for it. Once you buy it and install it there's no further cost. The picture quality is great and I can answer door through my phone and watch back videos.
I have a convertible on my drive and worry about Simone slashing the roof so this helps with my anxiety regarding that

We have Eufy too. We’ve got a few cameras at certain points on our house and garden. Unfortunately crime is on the rise here so it just makes us feel a little bit more secure, rightly or wrongly. We can, also, answer the door from our phones too.

Eufy are usually included in the Amazon Black Friday sale or they have their own.

I love our Ring. It's never lost internet like the previous poster said. I can answer quickly and easily on my phone. I've got the wireless one, just charge the battery about every 6-8 weeks.

megletthesecond · 18/11/2023 20:11

IIRC you keep the last 24hrs of footage if you don't pay for a ring subscription. I pay, I think it's £35 a year, so it keeps footage for four weeks. It's peace of mind when we're away, I was also able to upload footage of burglars in the street to the police.
The ring doorbell lasts about a month. I've just bought a spare battery so the next one is ready to swap immediately as they take ages to charge.
