Passport help, DD and her school trip.

DD (17) is going to Paris with the college in February, have paid £500 towards it so far…

Thought I was on the ball today as know her passport needs renewed and that that might take a month or so to to get it sorted for DD to tell me not only has she lost her passport but her friends have told her she might have a problem as you need to have a new passport for 3 months before you travel!!

Im absolutely fuming that she has been so laid back with this big of information but looking for any hope, that hers might still be classed as a renewal even without the we L’s one…

Please give me help Mumsnet!

Her friends are wrong. Maybe check the government guidance on this rather than panicking based on hearsay from teenagers?

Woahtherehoney · 17/11/2023 09:34

I don’t think it’s true you need a passport for 3 months before you travel - I know plenty of people who’ve had emergency passports issued days before they travel. Your best bet is to check what the entry requirements for France are though.

in terms of renewal if you lose a passport it isn’t a renewal, it is a brand new passport. You should be fine if you apply now though as long as you get an application in asap!

Musicaltheatremum · 17/11/2023 09:34

You don't need one 3 months before you travel...not sure where that came from but good luck with sorting...I think they are coming through quite quickly now.

TeenDivided · 17/11/2023 09:34

You don't need a new passport 3 months before travel surely? Never heard that.

Often has to be valid for 3/6 months after travel out date.

NotFastButFurious · 17/11/2023 09:34

Why would you need to have a new passport for 3 months before you travel?? I'd suggest she has a pretty good look for the old one first!

apply for a new passport do it online report it lost it won't take months ! I applied for mine although I had my info but it was back within 10 days.

LemonySippet · 17/11/2023 09:35

You can only do it as a renewal if you have the old one to send back (I've just also done DS's for a school trip). You do not need to have held it for 3 months before travel.

TeenDivided · 17/11/2023 09:36

(Do other people let their teens have control of their own passports? We have a fixed place where they all belong and if taken out I mentally track them until replaced.)

Mrsjayy · 17/11/2023 09:38

and of course you don't need a passport 3 months before travel I think a bunch of 17 year olds plucked that from the air! what was the last holiday she was on is her passport maybe in her case or a bag ?

PosterBoy · 17/11/2023 09:38

How lost can it be?

Did she use it for id somewhere and take it out of the house? Or does lost mean 'lost in the depths of my bedroom?'

Renewals are taking days not weeks at the moment so even with a lost passport I can't imagine it taking too long to get a new one

Whodhaveem · 17/11/2023 09:38

Thank you, I often find it easier to ask on here from people with experience rather than trawl through pages of information..

Im dyslexic though so that maybe why.

Thats a relief, I know it wasn’t the case with a renewal as people obviously have them fast tracked to arrive just before their trip but wasn’t sure with a new passport application.

Passport renewal taking about 10 days at moment. I just done mine

jennylamb1 · 17/11/2023 09:39

You don't need it 3 months before travel, however I would get on with putting a new application through as you are getting tight on time. Others are right in that it may take longer if you haven't got the old one to send back. Would suggest that everyone has a good look for it first and if you definitely can't find it put through an online application which is generally quicker.

Whodhaveem · 17/11/2023 09:40

She needed if for a job application a year back or so, she said she definitely brought it home but hasn’t seen it since, her room as definitely been gutted many times since then, although granted I didn’t know I was looking for a passport!

You need to report it lost - then apply for a ‘replacement’ not renewal.
you certainly don’t need it 3 months before travel.

i would report as lost today - then apply for the replacement at this time of year it shouldn’t take too long.

it will be somewhere probably in a bag but just reapply for a replacement I'd get her to do all the form filling though or at least sit with you while it's done as a "punishment " 😉

Roselilly36 · 17/11/2023 09:50

It will be a lot easier if you can find it to do the renewal, DS2 was back in a week. Not sure of the process for loss passport.

The three months idea probably comes from, that you now need three months as a minimum left to run on a passport on the date you enter EU country, this does not include any “extra” time that used to be added if you renewed early, the 10yrs validity is taken from the issue date.

good luck

allofthelove · 17/11/2023 10:38

My husbands passport renewal was done within a week, sent passport Monday , received new passport Friday morning .

TheChosenTwo · 17/11/2023 10:42

A replacement should take longer than a straightforward renewal but if you get it done now you’ll most likely still get it back before Christmas.
We are a very laid back household but passports is one of the few things dh and I are militant about! If it leaves the house we both hassle the dc until it goes back in the ‘passport drawer’. It’s not the kind of document I’d trust the dc to look after themselves precisely for this reason.

The gov.uk pages are designed and written to be very simple and accessible to all.

My guess is the passport is in a coat/jacket pocket somewhere, or the bottom of the wardrobe, or around the understairs cupboard, or wrapped up with some carrier bags. Or maybe tucked away inside a handbag she no longer uses? I recently found my house keys among a load of shopping bags I’d brought in from the car; similarly DFIL found a car key in the coats cupboard which had presumably fallen out of his jacket.

StillWantingADog · 17/11/2023 15:25

Friend is wrong. Plenty of stories on here about people stressing about getting a passport and heading to airport as soon as
it arrives
