If you gestational diabetes with first, did you have it again?

I've got my glucose test tomorrow and really, really hoping I don't have GD again. With my first pregnancy I had extreme thirst and was then told I had it after my test, which made sense asI had symptoms.

This time around no symptoms, well except going to the toilet a lot during the night but I put that down to drinking water too soon before bedtime.

Please share your experiences second time around Smile

I had it severely the first time, insulin twice a day and sugars totally uncontrolled without it. Not a single symptom though! And I’m not a risk factor at all (I was 30, Caucasian, not overweight, no family history).
Second time they said it might be worse. I tested and they said yes you do have it but more borderline, so let’s start with treating through diet. I was totally and easily able to control through diet and in fact my sugars never spiked high even when I ate things like a pizza. I was healthy but I didn’t follow a rigid diet and even after testing after every meal my sugars only went up a little bit.

So you may be lucky

@Ozgirl75 I was also borderline first time and diet controller. Rarely did my blood sugars spike. Just hope I don't have it again, it was the monitoring blood sugars everytime which I hated

I was borderline the first time, was very blasé with my diet but never had to go on medication.

No GDM the second time 😀 I'm not convinced I really had it the first time!

I had GD with my first but at the time I got pregnant I was very skinny which probably didnt help. Unfortunately I developed a craving for bananas and fizzy drinks which helped with sickness so I was overloaded with sugars. I put on 3 stone. In those days it wasn't routine to treat GD and i wasnt given any dietary advice other than to try to cut back on the cola. Baby was 10lb.

With my second I'd put on a few pounds and was a healthier weight to start with. I still wasn't eating particularly healthily but managed to avoid the fizzy drinks and didn't put on as much weight. DIdn't develop GD. Baby was 8lb 10.

40 years later I am now 3 stone heavier , which is about 20lb over my ideal weight, and just been diagnosed prediabetic. This, and my GD, are definitely weight related.

I had my test this morning. Has it changed now? There was no glucose drink. Just a blood test and then was told I can go home. Sure last time I had to have the drink, wait around for a couple of hours then a second blood test?

I seem to recall it was the blood test first and then if that raised any issues, you went back for then Glucose challenge test which is the one with the gross sugary drink every half hour and the multiple blood tests.

user6776 · 17/11/2023 16:06

@Ozgirl75 I've been told even if this one comes back normal I will still have to have the glucose drink test 🙄

Had it both times, needed insulin the second time

DeeCeeCherry · 17/11/2023 16:16

I had GD with 1st, but not with 2nd. No medication

Yes I didn’t even have the standard blood test the second time, it was straight to the challenge test. Bleugh!
I’ve also done it about 4 times since I had that last baby 10 years ago and every time it’s been fine. They’ve said now I don’t have to do it any more as they have a much more sensitive test that tests your sugars in a blood test for the previous few months. Very clever. I don’t mind having the test as I figure it’s good to pick up diabetes early and I wouldn’t have had a clue that I had GDD, I was totally symptom free.

Ponche · 17/11/2023 16:48

Had it both times, first time I narrowly avoided being put on insulin and the second time it was controlled with diet.

EcoCustard · 17/11/2023 17:03

I’ve had 4Dc, GD with Dc1. Nothing with Dc2.
Dc3 I was informed at 38 weeks I had GD from my test at 32 weeks, the trust had changed their parameters (can’t remember exact figures) and I was then considered to have it.

Dc4 I was diagnosed at 16 weeks the same as Dc1. With Dc4 I could not control my overnight fasting and required an increasing amount of insulin as pregnancy progressed. Diet controlled through the day with no issues.

TaaLaa · 17/11/2023 18:16

Been borderline twice, both controlled by meds. Since then my mum and brother have both been diagnosed with type 2.

TaaLaa · 17/11/2023 18:17

Sorry, controlled by diet, not meds.
