Cystitis / thrush symptoms a few days before period?

Is this normal?

A couple of days before my period I always seem to get symptoms of cystitis / thrush - mostly I get a dull ache / uncomfortable feeling after going to the loo. I am thinking it could be something to do with the change in hormones etc but I don’t really know.

I always get the dull ache inside just before. Can't say I have ever noticed loo discomfort. Just generally that something feels a bit different.

Summerisawashout · 17/11/2023 06:17

I get thrush symptoms a day or two after my period, have no idea why but it's really annoying and uncomfortable.

Very interested to hear if anyone has good advice on how to manage or prevent, hopefully there'll be some good replies here

Anyone with some advice?

Reviving this thread because I keep getting the same issue… my period is due tomorrow and yesterday I had really uncomfortable cystitis symptoms. I actually even took a cystitis sachet because I was in a lot of discomfort. The sachet helped, and the discomfort goes when my period starts…. but it gets me down having this each month and I am starting to think it’s not normal?? Would really appreciate any advice if anyone has been in the same boat!

I used to have this and yes I think it's hormonal thing! Once I came off birth control it didn't happen again so maybe try that?

winelover82 · 17/01/2024 23:27

@champagneandff thanks for your reply. I am not on any birth control though so not sure what’s going on 😕

I get recurrent thrush every month after my period, definitely hormones that cause it.

I find these really helpful
Canesflor Vaginal Probiotics | Helps Prevent Recurrence of Vaginal Infections Such as Thrush | Clinically Proven - Pack of 10 Vaginal Capsules (Pack of 1) https://amzn.eu/d/ia0JSNB

Also, if I eat a lot of sugar that makes it worse... sugar feeds the yeast. All I crave around my period is chocolate so this is a tricky one!!

I get this, definitely a hormone thing. Vaginal oestrogen has helped.

I get thrush but I also get BV which is horrible & I get that more than thrush around my period. I buy BV Gels and use them in the run up to my period, and always have a thrush pessary handy. (Not to use them together) I can usually tell the difference between Thrush & BV so I use whatever treatment I need too accordingly.

It’s definitely a hormonal thing! Also, certain sanitary towels can kick my Thrush off & it’s usually the Always Brand. So I now buy Asda’s own brand & I don’t get Thrush from them.

Sounds cliche but drink plenty of water as well, around your period.. It really is annoying I can sympathise x

I have interstitial cystitis (basically cystitis that never goes away) and it is always much worse in the week before my period. I’m presuming it’s hormone related, and maybe if the womb is bulkier and pressing on the bladder. I feel your pain (literally), it’s so uncomfortable, especially in the 30 mins after having a wee.

I get this ever since I had a Bartholin's Abcess which I was hospitalised for.

I never ever had thrush or anything before.

I think the trauma to the general area and all the antibiotics set it off and it's always worse in the days before my period.

It's achey and sometimes itchy. Going to give canesten a go for the first time.

Back on this thread because omg, my period is due in 2 days and after I went to the loo this morning, it was, and still is, so painful :(

My period is due in 2 days, but they have been a bit all over the place during the last few months so I am wondering if it's all linked. I think I should go speak to the GP but I always feel like they sometimes dismiss anything period-related. I have actually been considering going to see a private specialist and just taking the hit money-wise, hoping it's worth the investment.
