What is biting DS in bed at night??

roses2 · 16/11/2023 18:18

DS is waking up each morning with ~1 bite each day. This has been going on for 3 weeks. In a different place each time. On his back, face, hand...

I've hoovered, boil washed the sheets.

Any idea what it could be? Photo of bite attached.

I don't think it's bed bugs because it is one bite only each time.

Any ladybirds in bedroom? They can bite.

Moominmoko · 18/11/2023 01:10

Do you have pets?

DNLove · 18/11/2023 01:13

Any chance he has worms? Hand down pants having an itch? Moves hand to rest of body and transfers a worm? To rule out you can just buy over counter treatment. I do annually with kids even though no sign as they can be in their system without knowing, kinda same as treating a dog with wormer as a preventative measure.

I am dealing with bed bugs in a rental property at the moment. Tenant is really clean, and reacted really promptly when she was bitten three times in one night. Shetook her bedding apart but only other sign was some small black dots on the bed frame. No idea where the bugs came from. The first pest control firm who confirmed bed bugs were only able to provide a treatment date two months in the future. The second said a decade ago they never saw bedbugs. Now it is almost 100% of their work.

What a strange post -sounds like you have an obsession with parasitic worms.
Intestinal worms would not ‘bite’ the skin if transferred in the way you suggest so this scenario is so unlikely as to be beyond consideration.
Also, I have never ever heard of anyone giving their children an annual worming treatment like you do your pets - how unnecessary and potentially harmful. Or might your children need it because they forage on the ground as pets do?

Saschka · 18/11/2023 01:37

That is in countries where parasitic infections are common due to poor sanitation/contaminated drinking water. Not the UK. Very few people here have tapeworms or schistosomiasis. Regular antihelminthic treatments are not necessary.

Could still be bed bugs. Ours weren't biting in clusters, and when it first started was only around one bite a night. The bite sites you have given (upper body) are classic bed bug bite sites. How does the bite change? The one in the photo is quite large, I presume after it has been scratched?

Beachwaves127 · 18/11/2023 07:47

Spider?

margotrose · 18/11/2023 07:51

It could still be bedbugs - I would get a professional in to have a look.

ZZGirl · 18/11/2023 07:54

It's probably bed bugs. We had a problem when we bought our house and didn't know for months. Think they came in on the removal truck. I was getting like 1 bite a night for months and they looked like that. Get a professional in

user701 · 18/11/2023 07:57

There are still mosquitoes around because it’s been relatively mild. We still have nets over the beds (but would generally take them off by mid October). We sleep with windows open so nets over the bed are fab.

853ax · 18/11/2023 08:30

mosquitoes have been some around our house recently

Thewondererhasreturned · 18/11/2023 08:35

Spider? Even midgey i would advise indorex spray its brilliant first hoover carpets etc then even spray it on them too as well as mattress

This is really very unnecessary

Haggisfish3 · 18/11/2023 09:03

Mosquito?

bozzabollix · 18/11/2023 09:05

My daughter had bites recently and my husband found mosquitoes in her room, gone now since he whacked them.

You do know that overuse of chemical wormers contributes to resistance?

superplumb · 18/11/2023 11:41

It'll be a mosquito. It's warm enough still to have them around. I was bitten last week and found it sat on my window sill. They often go for wrists and ankles while sleeping as these areas are exposed. Have a look round and you'll find it quite easily.

roses2 · 18/11/2023 12:47

Thanks. So it's either a bed bug, mosquito or spider 😀

I'll smoke bomb the room and if that doesn't resolve it then I will call in pest control so it doesn't spread.

I had the same issue and it drove me mad for months but it turned out to be fleas (we have cats)

We came across a dust that is meant to be human and pet friendly but that kills bed bugs and other creepy crawlies. I can't remember what it's called now but it's only about £20 a bag and probably worth trying before paying for pest control.

I had no idea. Nightmare fuel 😲

roses2 · 12/01/2024 22:48

I had council pest control in for two sessions. The guy said he couldn't find any evidence at all of bed bugs. Said maybe it was hives but he sprayed anyhow.

1 week later I found this - looks like a bedbug to me.

There haven't been any more bites since the second spray so hopefully it / they have been killed off now.

That sure is a bed bug. Fingers crossed for you, but be extra vigilant in case egg laying has occurred.

It looks as if the OP's situation may be resolved but just going to say, you probably mean diatomaceous earth. It is best to buy food grade and it is available in all sizes, even small amounts.

It is very difficult to clean up if you use it on large areas and not a good idea to vacuum it up as it will clog the machinery.
