Will food prices ever go down again?

I did my food shop tonight and was "is that it?!"
Actually took a photo to send to my dad to say I thought they had forgotten stuff but nope, that was just the price

@EmpressSoleil yy that cat is saying "I see you have bought Discos. I do not eat Discos."

EmpressSoleil · 15/11/2023 22:38

Oh god I also have a plastic chewer here! (A cat just to confirm!). I read its because a lot of plastic bags and that type of thing have some kind of ingredient that some cats love. It is a pain though.

And yes to the corned beef! I used to not mind a corned beef toastie as a cheap thing but i think a can was close to £5 the last time I looked. It's insane.

This is the reason I stated using 'Too good to go', had lots of good bags with meat and fish, fresh bread and vegetables etc.
I freeze what I won't eat and it keeps me going for the week before payday.

Grocery prices are through the roof!

witchypaws · 15/11/2023 22:44

@2welshmums there's a great carvery near me that does it, I've just seen Booths has signed up and I keep checking but they're like gold dust

2welshmums · 15/11/2023 22:46

@witchypaws there's one near me too, I haven't tried it yet.
I've had some Starbucks and Morrisons cafe ones, they're good too 😊

Coldia · 15/11/2023 22:49

'Too good to go' is a bit hit and miss with shops here. You can end up with loads of bread and pastry which ofc is lovely and I'm not knocking it, but it's difficult to make a meal from. I usually give bits to neighbours as there's only so much you can freeze.

One thing that is great is that a couple of local carveries are on it and if you book a pickup they let you fill a tray yourself with what veg/trimmings you want and even give you a pot of gravy! Plus the meat ofc. They do the same with their buffet breakfast stuff. It is spot on, for £2.79.

Coldia · 15/11/2023 22:50

Sorry, x-post about the carveries. You both should definitely try them!

RagzRebooted · 15/11/2023 22:51

That soft cheese used to be about 35p a tub in Lidl/Aldi. Or the Tesco value version. Insane seeing it over £1.
Butter has actually gone down a bit, but most things just will maybe stop going up so fast.

witchypaws · 15/11/2023 23:08

@Coldia yeah I've tried the carvery and breakfasts. One carvery I got was a full roast and then they gave me 3 sausages as well so ended up with two meals out of it
Can't pick your own though, they put it in a tray for you

For ages after it all went crazy I found m&s was best value for what I'd call basics - £1.25 for 4 pints of milk, £1.60 for butter, £1 for six eggs, 70p for a loaf, £2.50 for actual mature cheddar, not that weird oily value stuff, £3 chicken thighs, £4 two salmon fillets. However now their prices are creeping up and in other stores some prices are coming down, but not across the board.

Ozgirl75 · 15/11/2023 23:33

witchypaws · 15/11/2023 21:50

This was £68. Under the crisps is some toilet rolls, and the bag is chicken thighs
Thought I would "treat" myself to a delivery so possibly more branded than usual but it's hardly salmon and caviar!

You could get that shop down at least £20 with scan and save 😜

Spendysis · 15/11/2023 23:36

Your cute cat is saying where are my dreamies

LuluBlakey1 · 15/11/2023 23:43

No, food, energy prices and fuel will never drop significantly again. That's how it works. Once business owners up their prices and profits very few are ever prepared to drop them- it's greed. And the prices in restaurants etc will never drop for the same reasons. Nor will rents.
It's capitalism at it's most disgustingly greedy worst- crashing in on a national crisis, reaping huge profits and retaining their price hikes when base costs fall because they can and their profits increase even more at that point.
Businesses screw consumers always.

witchypaws · 15/11/2023 23:47

@Ozgirl75 is that in store? I didn't think it was cheaper to do it that way but tell me more!

Fizbosshoes · 15/11/2023 23:56

I put all my shopping on the floor when it's delivered! It's quicker to empty the crates like that. Then put away obvs!
I notice butter has been getting cheaper (it was £2/250g and now own brand is 1.69) ....not noticed much else though.
But agree I used to gauge approx £20 per bag of shopping, now its more like 30-35

piscofrisco · 16/11/2023 06:48

Fuck me. It's a sad day where you spend £68 and that's all you get and we now consider Branston pickle a treat. This bloody country!
We are a family of 6, both dh and I work full time. Our food bill is horrendous. I batch cook, as does dh. I am doing 16:8 fasting-partly for weight loss and partly because it cuts down on a meal a day for me.We just can't seem to get the cost down at all. After mortgage, which has also doubled in our case, it's our biggest spend. I don't think it will ever go down really-except for maybe some of the top end luxury items that lots of people couldn't ordinarily afford anyway.

CormorantStrikesBack · 16/11/2023 06:55

Hovis bread is extortionate. We’ve gone onto either Aldi own brand or Tesco own brand from the One Stop next door when I’m doing a top up shop. I prefer the Aldi loaf to Hovis but the Tesco loaf is grim. To the extent I’m considering paying more for Hovis mid week.

EasternStandard · 16/11/2023 07:04

The receipt doesn’t look too bad. Potatoes are cheaper than McCain obvs

Or try Iceland, I haven’t used it but they had some guy talking about cut price lines plus no Christmas ad so it’s more savings

EasternStandard · 16/11/2023 07:18

Plus use a nectar card. Not sure if that receipt has savings after but you should get some off with particular items

Some stuff I just buy on offer and stock up

MotherofPearl · 16/11/2023 07:46

Ballsbaill · 15/11/2023 21:50

Iceland is famous for being an unaffordable country. When I went there in the summer the prices didn't shock me as they've risen so much here. It's scary.

I had the same in the summer when we visited Denmark and Sweden. Everyone had warned us about how expensive food and everything else would be, but the COLC had prepared us and it didn't seem that bad.

ssd · 16/11/2023 08:01

Food prices are constantly shocking.

On another note, i love your cats expression @witchypaws

Iceland isn't bad, I tend to go when the freezer is empty and do a big stock up. Got some really nice breaded chicken from there and sweet potato fries for easy meals
