How many play times do your KS2 kids get?

DD is in Year 3 and school have just cut their afternoon play time. So they get one in the morning plus lunchtime.

Curious about what other schools do.

When my DCs were in KS2 it was morning break and lunchtime only and it’s been the same for the schools I’ve worked in.

I teach Y3/4 and they need a run around in the afternoon before assembly in my opinion. It might only be 5 minutes but I'd hate not to have it. We dropped it at my school then reintroduced it. I've only ever worked at schools that finish at half 3 though and we'd struggle to fit it in if we finished earlier.

PuttingDownRoots · 15/11/2023 21:10

Mine has 15 mins morning, hour lunch, 10 mins afternoon. But they have a long school day (8.50-3.30).

I work in a lot of schools (supply teacher) and it's very rare for either KS2 or KS1 to have an afternoon break time.

KS2 is morning break and lunchtime only. Afternoon break for KS1.

My dc only had morning break and lunch time through infant and juniors, except for the first two weeks of year 3, when they were all rather bemused to be given it to "get them used to not having an afternoon break".
It was separate infant/juniors but around half the junior year came from their infant school, and most of the rest came from another infant school which also didn't have afternoon break.

Goodness, no afternoon play for KS1 sounds hellish. Play and exercise is so important - I find it so strange that headteachers don't feel the same. I know the curriculum is jam packed but that's the same regardless of a 10 minute break.

Moonflower12 · 15/11/2023 21:32

At my DD where I now work, KS2 have 15 minutes in the morning and half an hour at lunch, then eating lunch and then 10 minutes after.
KS1 have 15 minutes in the afternoon and some free flow too, in the outside learning areas.
KS2 have a 2 minute run around between lessons or assembly. They can have more if the teacher is happy to cover it. TAs cover all breaks and lunch play at our school.

Not hellish in my experience if I'm being honest. There's plenty of ways to get kids moving and refocused without a 10 minute break. I teach in some schools with an afternoon break and quite often find those children are harder to get back on task after they've been out to play as they frequently come back in more wired.

I work the same ks1.
Yes it's rare for afternoon break to happen.
The curriculum is so jam packed and now with Christmas play rehearsal on top as well.
Ours have a morning ( 15 minutes) and lunch break ( 1 hour long which 1/2 hr of that maximum is eating ).
They have P.E twice a week though.
Would you rather core subject learning or letting them run around a playground instead

BendingSpoons · 15/11/2023 21:43

My kids have never had an afternoon break (KS1 or KS2). DD in year 3 does 8.30-3.30 too, so a long day (state school, extra 20 mins a day to give a week longer at Oct half term). We never had an afternoon break when I was at school either.

NancyJoan · 15/11/2023 21:48

I don’t remember either of mine having an afternoon play. 30 mins in the morning, an hour at lunch, and PE three times a week tho.

Having taught EY/KS1, I can confidently say I'd rather have the break! Core subjects bar science are rarely taught in the afternoon anyway. It's difficult to fit in the curriculum regardless, so a 10 minute break makes no difference especially when you take into account the drop in productivity by the end of the afternoon.

Catifly · 15/11/2023 21:52

Obviously on a PE/forest school afternoon, it's not really an issue.

Sherrystrull · 15/11/2023 21:57

I teach y2. We have an afternoon play on the three afternoons a week we don't have PE. The children have ten minutes between lessons. It really helps them to focus in the second lesson. I'm a big believer in the social and emotional benefits of outside play so would hate to lose it.

sunshineandshowers40 · 15/11/2023 21:57

In my experience KS2 get a morning break (15-20 minutes) and a lunch, afternoon break is usually only for KS1 children.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 15/11/2023 22:14

We got rid of afternoon play about 10 years ago in our school. The day is 8.40-3.10. We have introduced a ten minute 'daily mile' where the children do get to stretch their legs and have some fresh air though.

welshweasel · 15/11/2023 22:28

15 minutes morning break, one hour for lunch, 15 minutes afternoon. School day runs 0830-1545.

lerstiun · 15/11/2023 23:02

Mine is KS1 and gets 20min in morning and afternoon, plus an hour for lunch. I've realised I don't know what KS2 get, I had assumed they'd get an afternoon break as we got one in my primary decades ago! School is open 8.30-3.30.

NotReadyForAutumnYet · 15/11/2023 23:49

KS1 and KS2 morning break and lunch break. Would prefer if they had an afternoon break.

Me too. I only do EYFS and KS1 and I can't remember the last time I saw an actual playtime in KS1.

Sometimes there is a 'if they need a break take them outside' situation.
