Delivery got wet - but I want to return it!

So I ordered a book on Amazon a couple of days ago. It's for DP for Christmas and I wasn't sure about it, I wanted to take a look at it and return it if it wasn't right. Which it isn't. The thing is - the courier left it on the doorstep and it's been raining all day. The packaging and book are wet and the pages are all weird and I don't know, warped I guess is the nearest word I can think of and a cursory glance shows that the print has smudged on some pages. I'm stuck with it aren't I? I had to change my wfh day short notice so I expected to be in for the delivery. It's not the courier's fault, there was nowhere dry to leave it. There's nothing I can do about it is there?

Just tell Amazon and they'll give you a refund. You might need to send the book back, sometimes they don't bother. I've had it happen before.

Complain on Amazon and they’ll probably refund you. I’d say it is the courier at fault. Courier should have left it with a neighbour, put it in plastic (I’ve had them leave things in Amazon branded plastic bags before) or just not delivered it at all. Dumping a cardboard box on a soggy doorstep in pouring rain is inappropriate, unless that’s what you’ve specified in the delivery instructions on Amazon. I understand and sympathise with why an individual driver just dumped it and I think the quid pro for the savings Amazon makes by working their drivers so hard is that occasionally they have to refund things.

I've raised this exact issue with Amazon and they refunded me.

If it's not a stupid question, how do I raise this with Amazon? I only seem to have an option to return or replace. Do I do it as a return?

Yes just do it as a return and choose the damaged option.

margotrose · 15/11/2023 15:47

You can request to return it as damaged - in my experience they won't even ask for it back - they'll just give you a refund.

Thanks both. I processed it as a refund and the option for damaged packaging and item was an option. I guess it's not an uncommon occurrence! They have asked for it to be returned, which is fine.

Definitely return for a refund. I had it with a rituals advent calendar. Ordered it Friday night not dreaming it would be delivered the next day. we went away overnight on the Saturday and it poured down. It was just thrown over the fence and was saturated. Bit of a faff to return but got them to collect and refund as it wasnt just the products I wanted, it was the actual calendar too. Their offer of a 10% refund wasn’t good enough.

Yes definitely return but I really don’t know why you don’t think it’s the couriers fault. Of course it is. It’s not suitable packaging to be left out in the rain! Im amazed you thought you should pay good money for a book that turned up ruined.

it would be different of course if they’d delivered it to your neighbour and then the neighbour had brought it round and just left it on your doorstep. But the courier did, so Amazon will be within their rights to reclaim costs from the courier.

You can call Amazon customer service on 0800 2797234. It's a bit of a palaver to verify yourself but once you get through to a person they've always been great.
