Sorry, it didn’t post this bit
The committee has submitted its recommendations to the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC), which will take a final decision on whether to implement a programme.

JCVI statement on a childhood varicella (chickenpox) vaccination programme

It’s only a recommendation, but I noticed it also recommended a catch up programme for children up to 5.

It could be a very long time before this is introduced (if at all). If you can afford it, I would recommend getting it done privately.

Shopper727 · 14/11/2023 16:52

Will be ages, by time they get all the info and decide on the plan to catch kids up, where it will fit in in the schedule, decide which vaccine, procure the vaccines, pgds, train staff, etc likely parts I’ve missed out too.

I'm so pleased about this. DS3 very nearly died of chickenpox earlier this year.

He's an otherwise healthy boy, got invasive group a strep infection as chickenpox reduced his immunity, then sepsis. He could easily have died or got brain damage.

Even if it wasn't for the few unlucky kids like him, the economics of parents taking a week or so off per child for chicken pox would make the jab worth it.

OobaOoba · 14/11/2023 16:54

Good, about time. My child nearly died from chickenpox and is going to be badly scared for life.
I think around 20 children die in the UK every year from it which is more than Covid afaik. We are so behind the rest of the world with a chickenpox vaccination.

Mine had chickenpox and strep also, terrifying.

Mummymummy89 · 14/11/2023 16:57

I tried to get it privately for dd but I got turned away because it was within three months of another live vaccine (maybe MMR?) They hadn't made this clear to me when I booked (I did get a refund).

The problem was, it was hard to reschedule because in the first year or so they get so many routine vaccines that you're always within 3mo of another live vaccine

CrookedBillet · 14/11/2023 17:06

This is great news. I paid for DD to have the vaccine when she was a baby. She sailed through CP outbreak after outbreak and it never touched her.

Mummymummy89 · 14/11/2023 17:08

Ps I did get a dose of it while breastfeeding and I don't know if it's possible for the baby to get some benefit from that. Dd has somehow avoided catching it when her classmates have had it.

So sorry you went through it too @OobaOoba

It's never your kid until it is :(
