I hate polyester!

Does anyone actually like clothes that are made of polyester, viscose or a mix with elastane? Low budget thought to designer brands seem obsessed with making us sweat and be unable to tumble dry or iron our clothing, or wash at a heat that stops the clothes from smelling.

Can we start a campaign to see the end of this horrible fabric and return to natural fabrics? It will be better for the environment too!

Viscose is my pet hate. No, I don’t want to spend a fortune on clothes that are going to shrink drastically when I wash them. Who on earth thought that was a good idea?

Nopenopenopenopenopenope · 14/11/2023 09:52

I hate it. Makes me smell really bad in the armpits and it doesn't wash out properly.

TheMurderousGoose · 14/11/2023 09:58

It's not very pleasant wearing a 100% poly top. I'm okay with a mix though.

In reality though I think many people would baulk at the prices that all natural fabrics would mean. And apparently cotton production isn't all that great for the environment either.

I refuse to buy it.

I LOVE elastane! The development of Lycra-enriched fabrics changed my life for the better.

I don't mind viscose: it feels nice, looks good, is versatile, and wears like a natural fibre (which it was, before it got processed). I'm not keen on the environmental damage, etc, but there comes a point where each of us has to pick a cut-off point. I'm not about to wear raw sackcloth, and can't afford to dress only in plant-dyed wool & silk.

Polyester can get in the bin. I have polyester & acrylic clothes & furnishings, due to the above-mentioned budget constraints, but I'm not pretending I love wearing petroleum byproducts. And recycled polyester? How horrible is that stuff??!

truetruebarneymcgrew · 14/11/2023 10:58

Viscose with elastic is soft and stretchy and great for my dc who are both quite sensory. I've never shrunk viscose in the wash, but it's always on a slower spin cycle and never tumbled.
I prefer natural fibres. I find most types of polyester makes my sweat stink, no matter my deodorant, cotton and wool don't! I loath acrylic, it sheds micro plastic particles in the wash, it doesn't allow skin to breathe, so it can be both sweat inducing and non insulated so rubbish in summer and winter.

Ginmonkeyagain · 14/11/2023 13:30

Viscose is ok I find. Acrylic and 100% polyester can get in the bin.

Lorrymum · 14/11/2023 19:56

So many shops happily cover clothes with "recycled polyester" labels as though that would persuade anyone to buy. Horrible stuff!

Jellykat · 14/11/2023 20:02

I wont wear anything made of Polyester.. it doesnt breathe, makes me sweaty and has no weight so doesnt hang nicely.. horrible plastic crackly pile of shite!

QuestionableMouse · 14/11/2023 20:07

Nope, it's horrible stuff. Makes me itch like mad too.

Viscose is okay - I chuck the few bits I have in with my cottons and it's always been fine.

Gardeningtime · 14/11/2023 20:09

I’m ok with this, particularly elastane or viscose , I’m quite lucky though I don’t excessively sweat so washing my clothes at 4o degrees is fine, and know how to iron at a low temp.

carbon60 · 14/11/2023 20:27

If you think polyester is bad you should try crimpelene , h.rrible sweaty stuff. 5 minutes wear and you stunk of sweat,

bellac11 · 14/11/2023 20:32

I dont mind viscose but HATE polyester.

Despite this I do have some clothes of it and wear them with resentment that my budget doesnt stretch to anything else

And dont get me started on 'recycled polyester', IT WAS BAD ENOUGH THE FIRST TIME

newnamethanks · 14/11/2023 20:32

A billion years ago when I was young and ignorant, my MIL gave us a gift of a pair of nylon sheets. Didn't realise quite how much she disliked me until I tried sleeping in them. Vile things. Straight to bin.

Gardeningtime · 14/11/2023 20:33

Recycled polyester always makes me think of those horrendous Joannie dresses.😂

In the 70s when we used to sleep at my nans house, my parents slept in a bed with orange nylon sheets, a heated blanket, in a house with electric heating and a badly tended open fire downstairs. My nan had a permanent fag hanging out her mouth.

Its a miracle I am here to tell the tale.

Giggorata · 14/11/2023 20:54

I quite like viscose. I don't find it sweaty and it hangs and dyes really well.
One of my favourite fabrics is the 35% viscose 65% cotton sousdi from Morocco, which washes and wears for ever.

I hate, loathe and despise polyester and don't buy it, apart from the odd fleece or furry gilet.
I am just watching the Champion of Champions Snooker tournament and they are making all the players wear these godawful tee shirts in polyester, high necked at that. I can only imagine how uncomfortable and sweaty they must be.
I wish manufacturers would get the message.

ShadowCipher · 14/11/2023 21:11

i prefer various hi vis type clothing and boiler suits, but i prefer the thick cotton type or similar rather than polyester

WildAndFree123 · 14/11/2023 21:19

I don’t find viscose sweaty or that it shrinks. I can’t stand polyester or acrylic though. So few jumpers around without these.

brokenhearted2 · 14/11/2023 21:19

You are quite wrong if you think it is only low budget designer brands. Valentino, Dior and Oscar de La Renta (no doubt all designers but I know of these three personally) polyester for reasons of drape and permanent pleating.

Ibizafun · 14/11/2023 22:33

Will only wear natural fibres close to my upper body- cotton, cashmere, wool or silk. Bit more relaxed with trousers, happy with a mix.

Ibizafun · 14/11/2023 22:35

Bought a Pucci sundress last summer- was so sure it was cotton by the feel, but was shocked to find it was a poly/cotton mix.

Giggorata · 15/11/2023 06:53

Oh, my mistake. Aparent ly the snooker shirts are Silktex, which is a mixture of viscose and polyester, as far as I can make out, with some breathing ability.
They just look like polyester.

I refuse to buy it.

Me too. But it does make clothes shopping incredibly slow and tedious, particularly online. I was looking at this cardigan for example https://www.whitestuff.com/p/2376/JAMIE-CARDI/BRT_PINK

JAMIE CARDI in BRIGHT PINK

Shop the JAMIE CARDI in BRIGHT PINK. A classic is a classic. But we couldn't help making this cardi in a bunch of bold shades, and a few stripes too. We wouldn't be White Stuff if we didn't.
