Are expensive frames worth it?

I usually just go for the £89/£99 2 for 1 offer at specsavers but I’m so fed up with having to pop back in every 6/8 weeks or so to get my glasses adjusted/tightened.

Those that buy more expensive frames, do you still have to do that? Is the extra money worth the less hassle? Any recommendations?

thanks

I find the same so waiting to see what people say. I find my cheap £2 primark sunglasses sit more comfortably than my spec savers glasses.

Id like to know too

Go to Asda. I've had mine for 3 years and haven't had a problem

I usually have the cheaper than that and have very rarely had to have them adjusted.

I have a nice pair of Raybans I ordered online and they have been great so far.
You can get much cheaper deals online than in the shops I found.

MyLadyTheKingsMother · 13/11/2023 22:03

I never have this problem. Are you sure they fit you properly? What are you doing to them to need them adjusted every 8 weeks?

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 13/11/2023 22:04

I wear Ray Ban frames with tinted lenses for Irlens Syndrom and have had the same frames for 4 years. I fancy a change but it won't be for a while yet as there is nothing wrong with my current pair.

cryinglaughing · 13/11/2023 22:05

My last pair were Raybans, had them five years, never had them adjusted or tightened.
Now have Tiffany, they are 2 years old and they do need tightening.

They do at the beginning. Then just get looser as the weeks go by.

Im not doing anything out of the ordinary. They’re either on my face or in their case.

I usually go to Specsavers for the 2 for 1 frames but once treated myself to a pair from an independent shop. I think £200 ish for the frame. I definitely feel the difference and took them back to have new lenses in when my prescription changed. They feel more robust and substantial and i love the shape and colour. Ive had them around 4 or 5 years now and wear them every day. I wish I could afford another pair of expensive frames.

Cynderella · 13/11/2023 23:05

I buy mine online, and they are fine. That said, when I tried on some trial frames (they send just frames, and you send them back), some were more comfortable than others. I don't buy designer frames, but I do spend a bit more on the lenses. Not sure if High St opticians have frames you can take home and try?

unvillage · 14/11/2023 00:51

I've bought from Firmoo because I like the quirkier styles. They are cheap, customisable at varying price points, and shipping is fine (2 weeks at most). They last well. They don't stand up to physical damage but I'm not sure that many would (I fell on my face and bent the frame). I got an identical replacement pair. This one lost a nose pad within a few months, but that was an easy fix by an optometrist. Because they're cheap and generally running a 2 for 1 on frames I got several pairs but only ever use my favourite pair.

I tend to buy the fishnet frames and still have to go back to have them adjusted every now and then.

Hermittrismegistus · 14/11/2023 01:42

Designer* , not 'fishnet'.

Swarovski frames a few years ago. Still shiny and perfect. I had no idea the designer ones were so much better. I just really liked those particular frames.

TheSandgroper · 14/11/2023 03:09

I have bought expensive frames twice, mostly because I could see through them properly rather than under or over them.

You can, later, just replace the lenses which don’t cost very much. My last set of frames were Prada (still gulping at that) but I kept them for 10 years.

Oh I need to Google these immediately. I'm a relatively new glasses wearer and dream of big sparkly ones.

Lollylemon · 14/11/2023 04:21

They sound faulty if are loosening up the so frequently. I've rarely been back to get frames adjusted.

I usually buy glasses from Asda as their all in price included what I wanted rather than being charged as an extra and Specsavers for test as nearer work, you can get prescription printed and take anywhere you want to be made up.
I prefer metal frames to plastic as more adjustable on nose. My Asda ones have lasted about 4yrs before I ended up switching, they were still fine just bit scuffed, grubby in hard to clean bits but the coatings on lenses tend to start to degrade before frames
I've had some expensive frames from an independent optician in my younger years that were better quality i.e made of titanium rather than just designer branded but some from there were on par with Asda quality too.
I've since realised I get bored and fancy a change of frames rather than just fresh lenses so it's actually not worthwhile me investing so much money.

Many designer frames can be found online cheaper and just provide with prescription info & select specification for lens to be made up. There's benefits on more in person service buying glasses of course and wanting to support local business.
