How to stop charities knocking on my grandmothers door?

Frequently my grandmother who is 88 yrs, gets various charities knocking for donations, they are as we all know very pushy and persistent. I have witnessed this many times and intervened by the ring door bell or by calling my grandmother.

Is there a way to opt out of this? It is such an awful way to act towards the elderly, she has dementia and does not understand what they are asking of her.

Surely they should not be allowed to try and take money off the vulnerable?!

Does she have somewhere where a NO CANVASSERS sign could be very clearly displayed? I agree that doorknockers shouldn't be allowed, a lot of charities have apparently stopped doing it for the reasons you mention.

You can start by putting a sign up - even just a piece of paper if it's covered with a bit of a porch roof or something saying: NO COLD CALLERS

People who try to get money out of 88yos belong in jail

Make her one of these to put on the door but add a bullet point that says 'No cold callers' or 'No Charities'.

It stops all sorts of unsolicited callers at my house.

Very often your Council, or even local police, give out No Cold Caller stickers. You can buy them on EBay easily too.

TryAgainWithFeeling · 13/11/2023 17:16

Id put up a notice along the lines of “No cold callers, no canvassers. This property is video monitored”.

KinS24 · 13/11/2023 17:16

Yes. Just get a plaque to stick by the bell. I have one that says ‘no cold callers, thank you’. Seems to work. I never get them.

Often councils provide such cards- worth contacting them?

SleepingisanArt · 13/11/2023 17:17

My father has a sign which his local Police force issued. Its very good at putting off cold callers! See if your local force has something which you can download and print or obtain from them.

SoMuchSimpler · 13/11/2023 17:19

Invite her to Mumsnet so that she can learn not to answer the door unless she's expecting visitors.

But really, put a sign up and report to the council if anyone ignores it.

Piccalillies · 13/11/2023 17:22

Our council will send out "No univited traders" stickers to attach to your door. Perhaps check the council website.

Love your sign, especially the bottom point 😀

I've heard that political literature is exempt from this, I don't know if it's some sort of law, be apparently they have to deliver official election literature because the public have a right to equal access to information. Of course it's up to you what you then do with it.

@TicTacNicNak i'm glad to hear this works , i wasn't sure if charities just ignored these types of signs
