A fabulous Michelin star restaurant in Europe

My husband and I would love to go to a beautiful place in Europe with a lovely dining experience.
Any recommendations?

San Sebastian, or Bilbao.

GrumpyPanda · 12/11/2023 18:39

Strasbourg?

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 12/11/2023 18:40

San Sebastián as above. Arzak.

or Epicure in Paris.

Gbeanf · 12/11/2023 18:41

Strong recommendation for Helen Darozze at Villa La Coste in Provence. It is beautiful and a complete experience

Pedallleur · 12/11/2023 18:42

Country, city, budget, number of stars? What does the guide recommend and what do you want to eat? A 20 course tasting menu might not be what you want. If it was just food I would go for a Logis de France with as many chimneys as possible. But if you want the whole experience then there are plenty in Europe and a few in the UK. The one in Aughton in Lancs is supposed to be lovely

InTheRainOnATrain · 12/11/2023 18:45

That’s pretty vague… any major European city is going to have a lot of Michelin options!

Headunderthecovers · 12/11/2023 18:46

Black Forest stay in Haus Kohlwald. Amazing breakfast as well. Lovely service.

Wildhorses2244 · 12/11/2023 18:47

Beaune in France, less than 2 hours drive from Lyon airport. Beautiful place, fantastic food market, home to some of the best wines in the world and more Michelin stars than you could fit in a week.

SpoonyBitchell · 12/11/2023 18:48

Lars Amsterdam.

DuckonaBike · 12/11/2023 18:49

Chateau du Pray in Amboise (Loire valley) is a wonderful place to stay and a fantastic restaurant. Best go in the summer so you can enjoy the swimming pool.

We haven’t really thought of a budget.
We love tasting menus.
Open to any suggestions. Thank you.

One question I'd ask is what makes a great dining experience to you? We've been lucky enough to eat at a few 1 and 2 star places in the UK, and although the food was amazing at them all, my current favourite experience is Carters of Mosely who are currently based in a greenhouse on a farm in Worcestershire (they move back to Brum in January on current plans). It is so friendly and unpretentious but with a great food concept of the vast majority of the menu being super local - like on the site or even in the same greenhouse - and the food is beautiful. But a fixed menu (and massive kudos for the quality of the gluten free catering too), and not if you want the instagrammable beautiful people vibe, or the Heston Blumethal performance food.

Schloss Schauenstein in Switzerland. 3 Michelin stars and ranked number 40 in the world.

I took my partner here as a ‘big’ birthday surprise. It cost a fucking fortune (about £1000 including tip and drinks) but if you are looking for something truly special, this is it.

We stayed in a B&B nearby. We were collected in a limo and returned there by limo after the meal (complimentary for those dining there but not staying in one of the rooms, as there aren’t enough rooms for the number of covers). I think there were 6 tables. We started the evening on the veranda overlooking mountains, with canapés and champagne, before being led into the castle for the meal. The tasting menu was and wine pairings were superb. Each course tasting and looked gorgeous. The water was 14chf a bottle - we went in summer so had a few of these which contributed to the bill.

The other I would recommend is Patrick Guilbaud in Dublin. The restaurant has an opulent dining room within the Merrion hotel, where we stayed (this time for my birthday!). Also 3 stars but not as expensive. Again a stunning menu, and we especially liked ending the meal with the cheese board - each cheese having its own drink pairing.

Brussels... accessible by train and one of the gastro capitals of Europe

MouseKeys · 12/11/2023 20:15

Louis XV, Alain Ducasse’s restaurant at the Hotel de Paris in Monaco. Absolutely the best chocolate panettone that I have ever tasted!

MouseKeys · 12/11/2023 20:16

Or Mirazur just down the road in Menton

Oh wow, the Swiss place sounds out of this world.
We could do that for our 50th. It would definitely have to be a special occasion.

Brussels sounds like a good shout.
We were thinking primarily about a weekend break, so not too long a flight.

El Celler de Can Roca in Girona, Spain was amazing. You can also tie it in with a few nights on the coast or in Barcelona.
