Does this tyre’s tread depth look ok for a 5 mile round trip?

Garage advised 3000 miles left on all tyres. One of them (rear tyre) me and DH are both unsure of and think the garage could be wrong. DH needs to do a 5 mile round trip in it for work, before it’ll be fit with a replacement tyre on Tuesday

I think not worth the risk and he should get a taxi or walk. WWYD?

I'd not want to be in a car in the rain with that little.

Chelseaflag · 12/11/2023 15:44

No that would be illegal

Be fine barely touching the wear indicator

I would replace them all now or the car will feel unbalanced. How long would 300 miles take you to do, couple of days ?

The garage actually said 3000 miles!

All four tyres being replaced on Tuesday. Never going to that garage again.

Sorry I thought it was 300, my bad.

Where’s the wear indicator?

You can see from the tread wear indicators to the left of your picture that they're below the level of the tyre. It's fine.

I wouldn't go driving fast on a waterlogged motorway but for short trips at low-ish speeds it's absolutely fine. Particularly if the garage also agree that it's goof for 3,000 miles.

Where’s the wear indicator?

The raised bits in the grooves are the TWI. When they're flush with the tyre surface you need new tyres.

DownNative · 12/11/2023 15:52

Wouldn't risk it, personally. Check out image.

As others have said, the wear indicators show the tyre is legal and safe. If it wasn’t, the trip being 5 miles instead of 50 or 500 would be irrelevant. Also not sure why you are never going to the garage again.

That would be massively affected by the angle of the photo. The wear indicators tell the true story.

PosterBoy · 12/11/2023 16:01

Looks okay. Bit of an over reaction on your part - they didn't suddenly start looking like that five minutes ago, you're getting them changed earlier than absolutely necessary, what's one day here or there?

whatdoidonowffs · 12/11/2023 16:06

Wear indicators circled if the tread is above these you’re fine

They don't advise to use a 20p any more. As others have said, look at the wear indicators. If level, don't drive and if above that, do drive. Ideally do it before you get to the wear bars.

Even if they're flush though, you're not going to suddenly start whizzing off the road sideways on a low-speed commute.

TeslaTwat · 12/11/2023 16:19

True. And to be fair I would 100% drive if flush. I'm not going to get it towed for that. I check the tyres monthly as part of my fleet safety check. Yawn but well advised.

cigarettesNalcohol · 12/11/2023 16:38

It's 5 miles - it will be fine. If you were driving from Briton to Scotland then no but 5 miles will be fine...

wildwestpioneer · 12/11/2023 16:44

It's still above the wear bars in the tyre, so still legal

This! The garage are right, likely you've got a few 1000 miles left in them. The legal limit is 1.6mm, the wear bars in the photo that are circled are when you need to replace the tyres. It's not near that yet

wited · 12/11/2023 20:03

5 miles? Yes I would drive that. They look okay to me for a lot more miles than that.

Yeah but tbf fantastic grip in the dry!

OP, seriously, there's plenty of life left in them.

I don’t know how to say this without sounding like a dick, but you mean England to Scotland? Scotland is in Britain.

PosterBoy · 12/11/2023 22:08

Brighton more likely surely? Probably audio dictate. Mine can't spell for shit.
