Nostalgia for high street shops of the past

I'm feeling nostalgic. I'm struggling to find a winter coat and I just KNOW I would have found the perfect one in BHS. I also loved their underwear, thermals, slippers, pyjamas, dressing gowns, simple but good quality tops and jumpers and Christmas bits and bobs. My local also had a affordable but great restaurant with a little play area and decent loos. Dh and I used to take the dc there for breakfast on Saturdays as a treat.

Anyone else feeling nostalgic for long gone shops?

Some friends and I were trying to remember a shop recently... it sold jeans (maybe denim jackets as well, but mostly jeans). It had a sort of "Wild West" theme - lots of wooden crates and stuff sitting about. This would have been in the 90s. We can't remember what it was called - anyone remember?

Notmetoo · 14/11/2023 14:04

Chelsea Girl, BHS, Littlewoods, Woolworths, Mothercare I miss them all.
I loved Chelsea Girl when I was a teenager and the others when older with young children. I also liked the cafes in BHS and woolworths I have happy memories of taking my then toddler child to Woolworths cafe.

@BelfastSmile ...was it in Belfast or a chain? Frasers on Cornmarket sold jeans and had the swing doors like on westerns. My husband was a wranglers wearer. I was levi.

The one I remember was in Ards Shopping Centre, down the wee side bit that now goes to Iceland, if you know it? It wasn't Frasers, as far as I remember.

BelfastSmile · 14/11/2023 14:31

I believe it was a chain, though.

eggandonion · 14/11/2023 14:39

Last time I was there I was having contractions with dd1...30 years ago! There was a Lee jeans factory shop in Newtownards.

KingsleyBorder · 14/11/2023 15:18

No, there’s a Paperchase across the road from my office in London.

Was it Jean Jeanie?

Was it Jeanster bought my Levis there.

BelfastSmile · 14/11/2023 16:28

It might have been Jeanster, but I'm not totally convinced...

Catsarelikepringles · 14/11/2023 16:48

Jeanster was down Burger King direction.

CadillacCataract · 14/11/2023 16:53

Definitely miss Woolies as Christmas approaches.

Also nostalgic for 90s Topshop Oxford Circus and 90s clothes shopping in general. Shelley’s Shoes, Hyper Hyper in Kensington, Morgan and Jane Norman for ‘going out’ clingy stuff.

@Catsarelikepringles @BelfastSmile I got my most perfect jeans ever in a shop in Queens Arcade. I can't imagine buying jeans online.

EilonwyWithRedGoldHair · 14/11/2023 19:34

I have mixed feelings about Debenhams as I worked there and hated it. Was sad about Woolworths at the time. Got some nice things in Past Times and The Pier.

There's a lot of independent ships that used to be jn Cardiff that I miss, but of the chains that are long gone the one I think of every now and then is Wax Lyrical. Loved their Rain candle, actually found a half used one in a box under the bed a year or so ago, brought back a lot of memories.

Being pregnant in the 00’s and being able to visit mothercare, babiesRus, and mamas and papa’s seeing everything all set out, choosing your nursery furniture, pushing the display prams about and getting excited for when you can use it all for real.

Not quite the same just ordering it off Amazon!

icelollycraving · 14/11/2023 20:10

Kookai, Morgan & Warehouse for my going out stuff back in the day. I worked in the first Karen Millen in Kent, loved working there, all my friends were jealous!
I loved going to Flip and General Trading Store in Covent Garden in the 80s.
Dickins & Jones and Bentalls, lots of memories of working there.
I do miss Dorothy Perkins, always liked their stuff.
I know the shop someone mentioned a store for plus size in Oxford Street, racking my brain for the name!
I work in retail and have done for 30+ years. It’s such a different industry now. Shopping was fun, you’d save and shop. Now everyone shops online, customers are far more tricksy, it’s a shame because the 90s were a golden time in retail.

icelollycraving · 14/11/2023 20:11

@Alighttouchonthetiller was it Rogers & Rogers?!

Clemfandango95 · 14/11/2023 20:28

As per previous posters Tammy Girl & Etam!

Would take the short 5 minute walk to my little Welsh town centre with my pocket money I'd saved up and buy from there 🥹

Also Debenhams at Christmas time!

Woolworths for a pick-&-mix ... I actually feel emotional now! 😂

Daisychainsandglitter · 14/11/2023 20:30

For those of you who liked Past Times the Museum selection although online only is very similar!

Daisychainsandglitter · 14/11/2023 20:31

I miss The Pier and Virgin Megastore.
90s shopping really was the best.

Pebbles16 · 14/11/2023 20:35

I used to sell those lovely strawberry soaps. Body Shop was my uni job - still under the awesome Anita Roddick, seen it has been sold again.
The problem with so many stores is that they were great and then shit at which point they were palmed off to someone else. I used to love the proper Monsoon brand before it nosedived fashion-wise and now is barely propped up by Accessorise

Ha, turns out Rymans have changed their branding to look very like Paperchase, and I need to go to Specsavers! (Thank goodness that is still on the high street!)
