Waterproof mattress protectors and electric blankets - can they be used together?

On my DC's beds they have a waterproof mattress protector, which has a sort of plasticky feel layer on the underside and a cotton layer on top.

I am thinking about getting an electric blanket (for the mattress) over the winter as my kids are already cold at night and I can't afford to put the heating on overnight.

Is it safe to use an electric blanket with a waterproof mattress protector like this? Presumably in order to ensure the mattress and electric blanket are protected, then the electric blanket would go under the mattress protector, but that means the warm blanket would be in contact with the plasticky part of the mattress protector. Is that ok?!

We got washable electric bed warmers so for my more reliable children the bed warmer is on top of the mattress protector as it very rarely needs washing. The child that's prone to bedwetting has a washable waterproof pad on top of the warmer so we don't need to wash the bed warmer every time their bed is changed- is probably thicker than what you are describing though and isn't really plastic backed as such.

I can't help you regarding the plastic side of things (personally I wouldn't as melted plastic sticks) but if that child is likely to wet the bed then I wouldn't use anything electrical underneath at all. I would consider the risk to be too high.

Would an electric throw that goes on top (of duvet and child) be better?

The kids are old enough not to wet the bed, it’s more if they were sick or something.

Get a Panda bamboo waterproof cover instead. Really dies the trick and no plastic. I have one to protect mattress from a serial puking cat.

I have cats and one once wet the bed so I put mattress protectors on all beds now.

We all use electric blankets. Never had a problem.

I have electric blanket with a THIN matress protector and then waterproof sheet on top. The heat still gets through and ive never had any issues re. The waterproof layer melting. I have this set up on my and DSs bed for several years.
