Jury service and loss of income

I'm ready to cry my dp has been selected for jury service the month of December. It already messes up lots of Christmas plans we have with family/ friends my dp had annual leave left to use for this which he'll lose and to top it off I've just read that you don't get paid for Jury service. My DP is the main ( by a long shot ) earner in our home. What the hell do we do 😫

@biggerthanadonkey You need to calm down, you have been given lots of good advice already.

Has your dc clarified whether or not he will get paid from work? Many jobs do pay in full. I’ve served twice as a juror and been paid in full both times, bit of a pita as I work 3 days a week and was needed in court 5 days a week but i didn’t lose out financially.

If they don’t then can he use his annual leave to cover the 2 week period? No loss of income then.

If neither of the above then he can ask to defer but must provide 3 alternative start dates.

You do need to submit a good reason to defer though. Financial hardship may be one but that would be the same whenever.

Tbh I only open my post maybe once or twice a month so chances are that if i got called up for jury service I'd miss the 7 day window in which to reply. As a pp said, it's not sent recorded so either take the steps to defer or just ignore.

There is no law that states you have to open your post the moment its received so I don't see how they can argue against it if they're not willing to send it recorded.

You get about £65 a day for each day you are required at court. The days you aren't required you can go to work as normal and get paid by your employer. I did 2 weeks jury service and was only required at court for 2 days out of 10.

Not if you need to book patients/clients in and don't get paid if you don't see them.

He will get some money. His employer may top it up.

Also, if his annual leave year runs to end of December and he cannot take annual leave now, his work is obliged to pay him for unused holiday.

If you are self employed you submit a letter from your accountant which could say you earn 1000 a day and that's what you get.

Ha! I wish! You don't get compensated for your actual loss of earnings in England if you are self employed, just the nominal £65 a day @Doggymummar

I got called up for jury service but as a self-employed hairdresser it would have really fucked me financially and I could have lost a lot of clients. Luckily (!) I suffer from anxiety-based IBS and vomiting in unfamiliar situations meaning I was able to send a doctor’s note to be excused.

With regards to Jury service. I just did 2 weeks in October 24. I’m self employed have lost out massively financially and they keep saying I’ve been paid when I haven’t! The service was ok and was in for most of my 2 weeks mainly hanging around waiting to be called. If you run your own business or your company won’t pay you. You don’t get anywhere near the money you would earn. I’m still emailing it’s February 25 now to try and get my expenses that they are saying I’ve already had! Real headache! Seems a common theme. You can defer if You are caring could be elderly parents young children or have a holiday booked although they asked me to send dates I was free so still had to do it. I wouldn’t rush to do it again.

I think the op may have had it sorted by now
