Any upcyclers or people who know about stripping furniture?

I've just got a dresser I want to strip

It's either emulsion or a chalk paint.

Why as the best way? Sanding? Paint stripper? Heat gun?

I'd ideally like to pullit back to woodgrain and varnish but if I can't I have Frenchic paint

There seems to be 2 layers.

A dark green then white over top.

Ok well personally I wouldn’t bother BUT if I was at gunpoint

I’d use a scraping tool, and Nitromors. It will be a long messy process and you’ll need a space without children or pets and some air circulating.

Once it’s largely stripped you’ll need a shedload of hand sanding to get it to a decent wooden look. Hours basically.

Then a clear varnish probably.

Lightly sand off the emulsion, then see what the green paint is like.

Sorry what do you mean you wouldn't bother?

It was free and I was looking for a little project

Yes because this is quite a BIG project and not a little one. 😁I am in the middle of an up cycling project so I’m currently swearing that I will never try and work with wood stripping again….

It is a big job to strip it so make sure you assess your real level of commitment to the job before starting.

Personally I would sand and fill as required and repaint it. But if you are really keen to strip it buy a good quality stripper like Nitromors, give it a good covering in a well ventilated area, then when it has done it's magic get going with your scrapers. A wire wool can be good for moulded areas. GL

It's hard to say whether or not it would be worth it from the photo. It looks more a glass top coffee table in the photo.

I'd sand or fine wire wool most of the emulsion away. That's not a huge job.

I'd then decide whether the wood you could see was in a good enough condition to continue.

Do you know the age and maker of the piece?

CatherinedeBourgh · 08/11/2023 19:46

The honest truth is that you won't know how hard a job it is until you get started. You also won't know what the right tool to use is, as different things work differently on different paints.

I tend to start with a heat gun, as it's the cheapest and least unpleasant if it works. If that fails, I try paint stripper, and only if even that doesn't work will I resort to sanding. Make sure there is no lead in the paint before you attempt sanding.

Shuldda · 08/11/2023 20:06

I might just sand it and paint.

That's the stool in the photo, painted in same stuff.
It says Wrighton bedroom furniture

Combination of both methods ?

KirstenBlest · 08/11/2023 20:53

Thanks. It's a known brand, so it's worth doing, especially if you like the shape.
The white paint is truly abominable. It's probably chalk paint but might be emulsion.

Follow the instructions for removing the chalk paint. When that's gone, reassess whether the wood is good enough to continue, or even if you like the half painted look. If you want to strip it, I'd use nitromors.

Do not varnish the finished article.

I'd love that project
