Redundancies during maternity leave

I've been on mat leave for a few months and have exchanged a few ad hoc friendly texts/calls with my boss in that time. Every so often I also check in on our company's intranet to keep in the loop and today saw there'd been an all company meeting with mandatory attendance. Just watched the recording and it was the head of the company reporting on the outcomes of a consultation that has apparently been underway - including the complete restructuring of certain teams in the company and a number of redundancies from those teams.

I'm not in any of those teams but work directly with them and the individuals taking redundancy, as we're not a big company. With that in mind it feels a bit odd to only learn of the consultation after the event (and only then because I stumbled on it) when it's clear from the recording that it has been well-publicised and understandably a very difficult time for the company over the last few months. Is this to be expected during mat leave - would you only expect to be told if your role was affected?

Totally accept if this is normal but it then does make me a bit nervous about what else I might be missing out on, particularly as the need for a consultation comes as a bit of a shock and suggests the company is facing difficulties. I've been there over a decade.

It's not necessarily the company is in trouble. There could be something else going on behind closed doors like a potential sale or merger. New interested parties who are looking to maximise profit...stuff like that.

If you want to check how they're doing you can find accounts on companies house.

Thanks, @Kinsters. Unfortunately it's not a limited company so no public accounts. But they are very open about the financials and particularly that we've been billing below target for years. You are right, though, that it's not necessarily as straightforward as the company being in trouble.
