I’m really struggling on what to buy DS (will be 3 in feb) for Christmas. He is non verbal so he can’t tell me what he wants, I’ve gone online and tried to show him some things but he wasn’t interested. I’m going to get him pyjamas and bath toys (he loves water) but apart from that I can’t think. Obviously he already has toys but none that he’s really interested in. Maybe I am buying the wrong things.

I’m wondering if anybody has any ideas? Maybe parents who also have autistic children and have found things that they’ve really enjoyed or have helped them. Thanks😊

Does he like sensory toys? Eg colour-changing lights or fibre optics?
Or how about a star projector
for his bedroom?

cocoapple · 07/11/2023 22:00

@FortunataTagnips Oooh I think he’d love a star projector! Thanks!

No problem! My brother got my DD one for Christmas a couple of years ago and it was a massive hit.

Mine loved brio trains at that age, and if memory serves wooden toys from Lidl - marble run, track with cars that went down, garage, cars. Pretty lights. Books. Shortly after that he went nuts for Lightning McQueen.

You might have more luck if you can get him a catalogue to look at.

I know most of MN hates this rhyme but I found it quite helpful
Something you want
Something you need
Something to wear
Something to read

MissHavershamReturns · 07/11/2023 22:04

Would he like a click clack car track

MissHavershamReturns · 07/11/2023 22:05

Mine also loved brio trains.

That's what I meant - didn't know the English word!

cocoapple · 07/11/2023 22:13

@MissHavershamReturns that looks like something he’d enjoy! Thank you

@StrictlyAFemaleFemale thanks so much you’ve given me lots of ideas

If he loves water, how about some sensory water beads.

splothersdog · 07/11/2023 22:19

Please be careful with sensory water beads. Especially if he puts things in his mouth. They continue to swell in the body and can easily cause an obstruction.

Rinkymcdinky · 07/11/2023 22:20

A sand pit.
Grimms blocks for stacking.

switswoo81 · 07/11/2023 22:21

A tuff tray for putting water toys in?

LittleMooli · 07/11/2023 22:22

My little one has this it's great as can be easily put away when not in use.

Magnatiles also a hit.

MissHavershamReturns · 07/11/2023 22:25

Would he like a sound book? There are nice hardback ones where you press for sound effects for the gruffalo and dear zoo. Mine used to LOVE these

Quantumphysicality · 07/11/2023 22:27

My asd kids love duplo from an early age

Anneta · 07/11/2023 22:36

My five year old grandson is non verbal and autistic. He loves stacking toys, sorting cubes where you put the shapes through the holes, toys with turning gears, magnetic cubes & toys like the one suggested where the cars run from top to bottom. I’ve just bought him the Legler giant marble run from Amazon, for Christmas, which I saw at a local special school. It’s not marbles but wooden balls and spinning circles. I’ve also bought him a weighted lap toy because he loves the weighted snake at his special school. His birthday is in December so I’ve bought a giant tombola spinning wheel from IKEA that clicks as it spins around. Last year he had a little Tikes sand and water tray.

A train set will probably go down well

hilbil21 · 07/11/2023 22:45

Does he like spinning? Google gonge carousel.

Anneta · 07/11/2023 22:51

These magicubes were a huge success. My grandson sorts them into rows with the colours all facing the same way so quickly, it’s amazing to watch him. They are pretty expensive though because you need to buy a lot.

A marble run! Our autistic child adores his! Maybe a sensory swing for his bedroom, a light projector and a fish bubble tube. I used to get presents so so wrong, now I know his likes and don’t struggle so much but he doesn’t like toys I would have expected. He loves his music books and he’ll be getting plenty of them. Good luck! And don’t spend a fortune if you don’t want to - I find my little one can take months to warm to a new present.

MissHavershamReturns · 08/11/2023 22:13

Hubelino marble runs are good for this age as you can build them with duplo
