Urgent - how to do this simple maths question (%)

meandmycrew · 07/11/2023 21:49

I thought you'd find 1% and then times that by 7 to find your 7%.

Once you found your 7%, add it to the £14.50.

BUT, I can't find 1% of £14.50... it's 0.145p

10% of £14.50 is £1.45 but that's no good either as I can't half it for 5% as the question wants 7%!

Thanks so much Blush

@meandmycrew , It's 107% of £14.50.

107 per cent of a value is the same as 1.07 of the value. (107 divided by 100)

1.07 * £14.50 = £15.515

but this needs to be rounded up to the nearest penny, so £15.52

KirstenBlest · 07/11/2023 22:17

For every 2 grams of butter, you need 3g of flour.

Divide the number of grams of butter by 2 to find 1 part
1 part is 640g/2 = 320g

You need 3*320g of flour = 960g
You only have 880g of flour.
So you need
960g - 880g = 80g

elkiedee · 07/11/2023 22:17

Question 1

14.5 (£) x 7 (%) is 101.5 p (98 +3.5) - rounded up to £1.02
£14.50 + £1.02 = £15.52

Question 2
If the ratio is 2:3, Chris needs 1.5 x as many grammes of flour as of butter
So to 640 g butter, he needs 960 g flour
960 - 880 = 80 (extra grammes of flour)

meandmycrew · 07/11/2023 22:18

Since you've been so helpful, please can someone tell me where I'm going wrong?

I did £52.20 divided by 5 which is £10.44. £10.44 x 5 is £52.20

So does that mean Adam's dad paid for the whole meal then?

£87

is this an app or game? It’s actually quite fun!

noblegiraffe · 07/11/2023 22:20

No, Adam's dad paid 3 parts of the ratio

so divide 52.20 by 3 to find 1 part of the ratio which is £17.40

Adam pays 2 parts of the ratio, so you need to do £17.40 x 2 to work out how much Adam pays

How did you do that!

It's a mini quiz on the website I'm studying my maths paper with Grin

Oh if you want to know how much the whole meal is

if 1 part of the ratio is £17.40, the whole meal is 5 parts of the ratio, so multiply £17.40 by 5.

PatriciaHolm · 07/11/2023 22:21

did £52.20 divided by 5 which is £10.44. £10.44 x 5 is £52.20

You are just doing the same calculation twice there. It's not telling you anything.

If the total bill has 5 parts, Adam paid 2 of them and his Dad paid 3.

Think of it as Adam pays 2x and his Dad pays 3x.

So what is x?

KirstenBlest · 07/11/2023 22:22

Keep it simple, and put it in words you understand.
Ask if you are unsure.
It's not as difficult as you think it is, especially if you think 'I'm rubbish at maths'.

meandmycrew · 07/11/2023 22:22

noblegiraffe · 07/11/2023 22:20

No, Adam's dad paid 3 parts of the ratio

so divide 52.20 by 3 to find 1 part of the ratio which is £17.40

Adam pays 2 parts of the ratio, so you need to do £17.40 x 2 to work out how much Adam pays

But it says Adam's dad paid £52.20?

meandmycrew · 07/11/2023 22:22

Adam : Adam's dad is 2:3 so Adam pays 2 parts of the ratio, Adam's dad pays 3.

titchy · 07/11/2023 22:23

but it doesn't work because you can't have half a pence for example

Of course you can! When you have you final amount you round to the nearest whole pence that's all.

elkiedee · 07/11/2023 22:24

Adam and dad's meal costs £87

If they split it 2:3

52.20/3 is 17.40 - 17.40 x 5 (2 +3) is 87

Katonhottinroof · 07/11/2023 22:25

Should have explained my workings out, apologies. It was to divide how much the dad paid into three, once you have that figure you times that by two and add it on to how much the dad paid.

I mainly only understand maths when it comes to money- it’s the fear of overspending or someone/some business screwing me out of my hard earned money!

I think find a way that works for you. Don’t worry about it if it’s elegant as long as you get to the right number. Good luck!

SoIRejoined · 07/11/2023 22:25

With the ratio question, you need to make sure you are working with the correct part of the ratio. It's talking about how much the Dad paid - he is "3" in the ratio, so you divide by 3 to find the value of one unit in the ratio.

If the question told you the whole meal cost say £100, then you would divide that by 5, as you are working with the whole ratio. That would give you 20. So Adam would pay 40 (2 X 20) and Dad 60 (3 X 20)

MaggieFS · 07/11/2023 22:26

Someone's homework I think!

KirstenBlest · 07/11/2023 22:28

The whole bill is x.
Dad pays 3/5 of the bill, which is £52.50

You want to find 5/5 of the bill.

(5/3) * £52.50 = £87.50

meandmycrew · 07/11/2023 22:33

elkiedee · 07/11/2023 22:24

Adam and dad's meal costs £87

If they split it 2:3

52.20/3 is 17.40 - 17.40 x 5 (2 +3) is 87

Ooo I get it now.

So just find out 1 part of Adam's dads payment, which is 17.40 because that times 3 is 52.20

17.40 x 5 is 87. The 17.40 is 1 part of the 5 part ratio, which was found by finding out 1/3 of the £52.20

Thank you all so very much

You've been more help than a lot of the online videos

But it says Adam's dad paid £52.20?

Yes, and that is 3 parts of the ratio. The total cost of the meal is the 3 parts of the ratio that Adam's dad paid (£52.20) plus the two parts of the ratio Adam paid.

So you need to find out how much one part of the ratio is by dividing the £52.20 by 3, which is £17.40 and then multiply it by 5 to get the total of how much all 5 parts of the ratio come to altogether: £87.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 07/11/2023 22:35

Cross-posted! Glad you got it, OP.

I have just gone over what I was getting confused about and a part of my brain was thinking 'surely it must be a smaller number than 87, it's his dad after all!'

Back to maths class I go

You can use a bar model to help you with ratio problems too. Anyone who’s enjoyed working these out, Google Barvember and have a go at solving the problems on there. Bar models can be really helpful for understanding the question.
