Am I supposed to leave a tip?

For the housekeeping team, when staying in a hotel?

They have been lovely, and really looked after me while I was here, but I am kind of thinking, isn't that their job?

I don't know if a tip is the norm or not

I don't generally leave a tip for them, but I tend to go a few days with the do not disturb sign on the door so they don't have to clean quite so frequently!

I think this is an American custom tbh. But if you think they've done a good job and you can afford it then why not?

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 07/11/2023 21:20

I wouldn’t, we didn’t get to keep any tips, supposedly it all went to charity. Large international hotel chain. Felt that was very unfair as f and b staff were allowed to keep any tips. suspect the money actually went in someone’s back pocket higher up the management chain - as any non monetary tips and thank you cards always went to a certain higher up or were claimed to ‘have been earnt’ by them, even though they never did any physical housekeeping.

For a holiday abroad I usually leave a tip, 10 or 20euro. I also once heard about leaving a tip at the start of the week, and it definitely works for refills of goodies in the room!

Thanks

Yes, always. It’s a grim, physical, pressurised, poorly-paid job.

Pleaseme · 08/11/2023 06:56

I used to work in housekeeping. People would leave the odd fiver on the dressing table always much appreciated.

Eddielizzard · 08/11/2023 07:00

I do although I don't think it's expected. It's a tough job, not well paid

Tilllly · 08/11/2023 07:42

Ah

Right then, in that case I will!!

I didn't want them, thinking I'd left it by mistake or something, so I will leave it with a note saying thank you

Does where you’re staying have a staff recognition scheme at all? The hotel chain I worked for many years ago had one and if you got a nice mention on any customer feedback you got a reward that way.

Roselilly36 · 08/11/2023 08:05

We always leave a couple of pounds/euros each day.

Didn’t you just hide it in your shoe? I used to!

I wouldn’t leave a tip in the Uk where we know people get minimum wage and benefit top ups if they need it. I try to tip generously in in countries that don’t have the state support that we have, but it’s not necessary here.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 08/11/2023 08:19

@hologramvirus working in pairs and random security checks didn’t make it worth doing that. Not worth losing a job over being reported for breaking ‘rules’ / reported for stealing.
There was an amazingly high turn over of staff! Very few lasted more than a year due to poor morale - and lot of the younger staff moved to f and b where tips could double their hourly wage of £11ph.

ssd · 08/11/2023 08:41

That's so unfair you didn't get to keep your tips, was this just the place you worked at or the policy for the whole chain?

If its company policy i think you should name and shame!!

ssd · 08/11/2023 08:42

Sorry that was to @Alphabet1spaghetti2

Tilllly · 08/11/2023 09:35

I've even stripped the bed

@ssd i think it was just our hotel. But it’s such a huge, international chain that it could be quite likely that others have the same policy even if it isn’t in the employee handbook.
If I give a tip, I always ask if the individual actually receives the tip, and prefer to give it to them directly, to ensure that the right person is rewarded. This applies to any tipping situation.
