Why would women accept and celebrate mysogonistic content

Ok, I will probably be laughed at and show my age but wtf did I just watch.
Dd going abroad to see a concert next year which is obviously fine, but I'd never heard of them and looked them up and I'm actually astonished and also somewhat disgusted. Foreign band, so had to look at the lyrics.
No need to link and promote but I really cannot get my head around women listening and celebrating most obvious mysogonistic content. DD is laughing at me and thinks that it's all hilarous, but I can't see what's so funny about songs celebrating DV, SA, CSA etc.
I'm probably showing my own naivity here but I am shocked that large numbers of women are absolutely OK with this type of content, even older ones. And stupid me thought it was just "rap music" that contained this. Just why!
Can anyone explain to me why this is deemed ok even if just for "entertainment" reasons? I really thought we had advanced further by 2023, but maybe I am just way too behind.

I really can’t imagine a popular artist writing a song celebrating CSA.

I’m not sure the purpose of this thread if you don’t say the artist.

AgnesX · 07/11/2023 20:06

Who is it, what era is it from?

Cupofnothing · 07/11/2023 20:13

They are old but still selling out venues everywhere now, Rammstein.

Maybe I am missing some very obvious humour here but I think it's disgusting

Bloody hell those are horrible lyrics!

Pammela2 · 07/11/2023 20:23

Oh dear.. those are horrid. I’d be the same as you but some people probably love the outrage of it and are almost proud of not being ‘offended’ of you know what I mean..

supersonicginandtonic · 07/11/2023 20:23

My dd 16 loves rammstein, seen them several times. I've never thought to Google the lyrics.
There are a lot of songs around nowadays that may cause offence but we all have different tastes.
I wouldn't cause an argument with my daughter over it.

username2373 · 07/11/2023 20:24

What is csa?

You might want to google those lyrics.
I won't be causing an argument as DD is an adult but I certainly would discuss it with a 16 year old.

I read the lyrics and they are awful.
Not just women, but you'd hope men wouldn't be happy chanting all that either.

I personally always thought popular culture needs to be a bit
'cleaner' if we want a better new generation, but I'm sure people will argue that this would be censoring and sanitising, and anti art.

So much violence (sexual or not) on our screens, in our music, must normalise it somewhat and desensitise some people.

PinkFrogss · 07/11/2023 21:03

Those are indeed some very gross lyrics, I don’t blame you at all for judging tbh OP

Cupofnothing · 07/11/2023 21:19

The lyrics are gross, but I am more concerend about the complete indifference of the audience. I mean these people sell out in the UK and US and they won't be the only band either with content like this.
Apprently it isnt even their worst stuff but I don't think I want to look up more.

I remember asking myself the same question when all these women were reading 50 Shades and Twilight. It also puzzles me as to why young girls would enjoy seeing singers wearing so very little and singing such charming songs such as Wet as P*ssy. It's not feminism and it's not empowering.

SisterMichaelsHabit · 07/11/2023 21:32

Well first of all Rammstein usually sing in German so most people probably have no idea what they're singing.

Secondly they're decades old so it's not a new thing.

Third they are known (by people who actually do know what they're singing about) for holding up a lens to life to portray a gritty reality, they are not advocating these things. If anything, their songs are supposed to be portraying the objectionable point of view to draw attention to everything that is wrong with it. They're painting vignettes.

Did you have the same objections to U2's Stay? "You say when he hits you, you don't mind/because when he hurts you, you feel alive, hey now, is that what it is?" which was a song based on a film? Or was that fine because it was poppy?

SisterMichaelsHabit · 07/11/2023 21:35

Last, thanks for telling us that Rammstein is on tour soon, I must book tickets!

NotMyCircusAnymore · 07/11/2023 21:42

Love U2's stay and yes I'm a DV survivor. I used to wonder why my mother stayed to be treated like that and let us children be subjected to it too.

I don't know Rammstein but of course if their lyrics are describing and not promoting misogynistic abuse then that's entirely different.

There are many songs which do speak very disrespectfully of women. It's an age-old problem, remember MungoJerrie's In The Summer Time?

WomenShouldStillWinWomensSports · 07/11/2023 21:42

Why is it always women who get shit when men say or do stuff? Your whole post OP is attacking women for something men (allegedly) did!
Don't you think you're being quite misogynistic holding women to higher behavioural standards than men, and that this perhaps plays into the gender stereotypes that women are supposed to be "good" and "nice?"

uglyswan · 07/11/2023 21:53

For context: Rammstein singer Till Lindemann has been accused for sexual assault by multiple women. The women refused to speak to the public prosecutor's office after Lindemann's lawyers announced that they would sue anyone who came forward with public allegations and effectively gagged the press, and so the investigations were dropped. Feminist campaigns like "Keine Show für Täter" have been trying to get his shows cancelled, to no avail.

WimpiestMum · 07/11/2023 22:40

I used to love Rammstein. Loved the music but the lyrics often made me feel vaguely uncomfortable though I never paid enough attention to them to distinguish whether they are critically describing issues or glamorising them. I think though that they tried to portray an image of themselves as hard guys that shouldn't be messed with (at least twenty years ago when I used to listen to them) and I didn't like that.

Greenyinabottle · 08/11/2023 07:29

I’m German and I have been listening to them since my teens. I can assure you that their songs do not celebrate or promote violence or any type of abuse.
I am not surprised that you find the lyrics shocking because they are just literal translations of the words and they do not convey the real message behind them. Most of their songs have a double meaning and there is a lot of word play which is difficult to explain at times.

They are an absolutely phenomenal band, and as a previous poster mentioned, they cover a lot of taboo topics. Many of their songs are really heart wrenching when you peel back the layers, as most of us can relate. The lyrics are usually quite deep, but stand in stark juxtaposition to the energetic music and stage show.

There were abuse allegations earlier this year which were investigated and dismissed. The gagging order was enforced to stop a media witch hunt of unprecedented proportions. Victim were not discouraged to come forward, but they were asked to speak to the police. The investigation was closed with no charges.

Greenyinabottle · 08/11/2023 08:10

And since you mentioned those songs:
“Pussy” is about sex tourism and the mindset of pathetic men who engage in this practice. “Tier” likens an abusive father to an animal and describes the daughter’s torment which supposedly leads her to kill him. I hope this gives some perspective:)

Messup · 08/11/2023 10:35

I don’t think they are misogynistic but obviously highly controversial. I quite like some of their songs but I probably am missing the meaning entirely. Some I won’t listen to because they cross a line. There was no need to turn the horrific incest case in Austria into a song. I also won’t watch any films that are based on the case because it’s just horrific.

I find a lot of mainstream music far more concerning because it often normalises toxic and unhealthy boundary crossing. I think that’s far more damaging. Same for films

Edited

I’m not blaming women. I just don’t understand why women would enjoy such content. It’s not about this one band in particular. Tbh I find the Cardi B one (WAP) absolutely disgusting and concerning. Probably more so even
