Complete rut

I’ve gone from being active hardly drinking to this awful rut of doing no exercise and a glass of wine or two most evenings…This has been going on for a year. I don’t feel down I just feel like meh I can’t be bothered, I can’t be bothered to even make myself look nice anymore! How do I get out of this awful rut?!

Poor you, sorry you're feeling in a rut. Be kind to yourself, it happens easily - life is busy and it's not like you've murdered anyone!

What works for me is focusing just on the next two days and making v small improvement. So I set quite tangible goals for the next two days (and I do take the time to decide what they are).

So for me what a good week looks like is 10k steps a day, 4-5 workouts, 80g protein daily, 5 x fruit and veg daily and around 1800 calories. I feel better when I live that way.

But if I'm in a rut saying I will do all that might feel a bit much/I might feel like I've failed if I don't do it all and then think 'fuck it' and eat a pizza for dinner (which is fine occasionally obvi but not in line with my goals). So instead I make a plan of how I'm going to 'win' tm - so maybe I make a goal that I do no less than 5k steps and/go for a 20 min outdoor walk/do a 15 min at home youtube workout (I love Caroline Girvan) and I have 20g protein and a piece of fruit for breakfast. One I've already 'won' those small things it feels easier and I want to do more. Does that make sense?

Accountability helps too. Why don't you come back to this thread tomorrow and say how you've got on?

Thankyou so much for replying! So I went today to join the local gym! But just small steps so maybe for a couple of weeks go twice a week, then increase?

I borrowed my daughters fit bit this morn to get an idea of how many steps i did in a day and it was appalling!

Well done, that's amazing! Getting back into the routine of going is the hardest part - so a really positive step! I reckon instead of thinking about your steps as appalling, why don't you use today's base number to challenge yourself to do a bit more - not loads more but say 1-2k more over the next week? You might want to do more than that once you've started but for me making the goal v achievable is key!
