Salt

Just a quick thread to get a balanced view. What is a reasonable amount of salt to add to 500g minced beef when making a shepherd's pie? A friend of mine added 10 grinds of sea salt and I couldn't eat it , she thinks this is a normal amount of seasoning to use and ate her portion happily.

Well different grinders will dispense different amounts per grind, but that does sound a lot. I have a huge 38 litre stock pot I use for making vast quantities of pasta and I don't think I would do more than 5/6 grinds for that and even then the pasta is drained.
Did she also add stock cubes or anything else salty?

She used veggie stock and put butter in the mash topping.

I would normally add 2/3 grinds for a similar meal then allow the person eating to season further if required. She thinks this is under seasoning. All I could taste was salt when I tried to eat her meal!

I don't add salt to anything (dash diet) Loads of amazing seasonings meaning you don't miss it

I rarely use salt. I use herbs and spices and only revert to salt if I feel it's lacking something.

10 grinds and a stock cube seems a lot. Problem is once you cook with salt, foods seems bland without it at first.

I recently ate out and my food had had salt added - I could see the grains on top of the meal and it ruined it as all tasted the same and far too salty.

I think it's the eaters' choice to add salt at a restaurant which is why there is salt and pepper on the tables!

If it was a home cooked invitation meal, I'd just accept that's how they cook.

I also hardly ever add salt to food, stick, herbs and spices etc usually do the trick. That does sound like an awful lot of salt.. maybe her palate is just used to it?

I also had a very salty meal, went to Steak and Co and everything was absolutely covered in it.

As you have discovered everyone is different. I don't use much, husband prefers more so we season dishes to my taste and he adds more if he needs it. Is she a smoker? They often use more salt as their sense of taste is greatly altered by the cigarettes.

It's interesting to read your posts as we got into a bit of a debate about how much salt is okay for a 4 portion meal , the conclusion being that we'll go to a restaurant next time we see each other😂

I don't use any and my DH uses loads.

I can't taste the difference he says he can.

I think salt is for searing once cooked.

The only thing I season is roast potatoes or meat. Then I don't add a lot

@SleepingisanArt We're both ex smokers.
