If your DC play a musical instrument with music

Can you advise please? DC has a book of music and a cd which came with it. I've read the cd into Music/iTunes and uploaded it to her library on her iphone. The only problem is it's far too fast for her to play along to. It doesn't seem possible in Music to make the music play more slowly. The software that is on the CD supposedly for this purpose doesn't run on our laptop (because it's apple?).

We can't be the only ones with this issue, so how do your Dc practice? Is there an app which is good for this sort of thing?

My son is 24 and teaching himself piano with a gazillion YouTube videos. Some do notes and reading music. Others just do by memory.

I have a business friend that does online membership for piano - I enjoyed his stuff - Mark Deeks.

how old are they? You can sign up for teachers resources on https://www.tes.com/teaching-resources they might have something suitable?

I searched for speedshifter in the App Store and there are some options - not tried them as I have the old speed shifter

Also YouTube lets you slow down videos which can be useful

I don't need recommendations for teaching her thanks, she has weekly lessons and is in the school band. This is just extra - she has this book she wants to play from and wants to practice playing with the accompaniment but it's too fast for her.

We've had this problem,

I recorded it in my phone, uploaded it to YouTube, set it to private.

Then you can mess with the playback speed.

PingoDome · 07/11/2023 17:01

Old-school style, we just used a metronome, so they practised as slowly as they liked, then went up a click or two, and again, and again, until they'd reached the speed of the backing track or the neighbours started throwing things, whichever came first.

It's a shame the cd doesn't come with practice tracks, usually they come with a slow practice version and a performance one up to speed. The solution of recording to YouTube is probably the quickest. I teach a wee girl and she doesn't have anything to play CDs on so have just recorded it playing on my phone and sent bt WhatsApp! Sometimes the low tech solutions do the job. There might be a code with the book for an online recording?

TreeTopples · 07/11/2023 17:14

Oh, thanks for the YouTube trick, will definitely give it a go.

@horseymum there is a link but it gives their own software which won't run on our laptop unfortunately. There are two tracks for each song, one with the instrument playing so you can hear what it's supposed to be like and one without. A slower one would be good!

Only other suggestion I can think of is can someone play the backing track for you, but slower? We did that with a piece and recorded the accompanist playing at the speed we wanted. It'll only work though if it's just a piano accompaniment, and you know a willing pianist!

There must be music speed changer apps on iphone app store. There's plenty on Android, including one helpfully called "Music Speed Changer". It can play music files in a variety of formats.

RainBow725 · 07/11/2023 18:15

Search for the pieces on You Tube - lots of people upload recordings of the current syllabus. Then you can change the playback speed on YouTube as pp said.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 07/11/2023 18:16

We use the YouTube trick. Never had to record it myself, we’ve always found the piece already on there

aswarmofmidges · 07/11/2023 18:21

If you find others playing the piece on YouTube do make sure you compare it to the original - sone are very poor and you wouldn't want to learn incorrectly
