Lotssssssssss more new build houses/estates built on the outside of the town’s ring roads.

CountryManor · 07/11/2023 00:49

My hometown has turned into an expensive place to live and has so many strangers walking about, I never seem to see the same person twice 😂.

LovelaceBiggWither · 07/11/2023 01:00

Earthquake.

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 07/11/2023 01:39

No Idea I haven't set foot in over ten years. But I have heard all the little high street shops have gone and its a bit of a ghost town. It used to be a fairly bustling country market town.

ButtonFork · 07/11/2023 01:43

It's gone downhill very badly. There was one industry, that's gone, and now everyone is on spice and stealing from each other. Houses are cheap, though! 👍🙄

Giggorata · 07/11/2023 02:24

It was a seaside holiday town, quiet in the winter and bustling during the season. Loads to do, busy high street, theatres, cafes, bars, amusements, funfair, etc.
Now it has gone the way of most seaside towns.

mathanxiety · 07/11/2023 03:48

It has been transformed into a bustling and very pricey place to live. The population has ballooned. The school that had 60 kids and one teacher in infants class when mum and dad were casting around for somewhere to send me is now a highly desirable school. There are amenities for recreation and clubs and activities for people of all ages. It was a winner in its category of the Tidy Towns competition (Ireland).

AzureBlue99 · 07/11/2023 04:58

It has become a shithole.

garlictwist · 07/11/2023 05:04

My area used to be quite run down with a working tannery, dirty beck and loads of litter.

Now the tannery is trendy flats, they've built a Waitrose and people pay £200k plus for a tiny back to back to live there. I've been priced out!

PurBal · 07/11/2023 05:05

Let’s be honest, I think Woolworths closing was the beginning of the decline of the High St in many areas.

Daisychainsandglitter · 07/11/2023 05:52

It's become a total dump which is a shame because it was a really nice place to grow up.
I went there for work a few weeks ago and was really shocked at the decline of the town centre.

MintJulia · 07/11/2023 06:06

It was a small market town surrounded by countryside.

Now it's an overpriced dump, with vast housing estates, so built up it's merged with every other town around, it's clogged with traffic and has a serious drug problem.

I left at 18 and would never go back. I'm about to move somewhere much more remote 😊

erikbloodaxe · 07/11/2023 06:41

From what I can tell it's just the same but with a lot of Polish people and a housing development where there used to be fields.

Same families, same shops, same small pond big fish mentality.

hellohellothere · 07/11/2023 06:43

It used to be a vibrant seaside town. It's now run down with a dead high street and full of substance abuse.

HappyDaze23 · 07/11/2023 06:49

It’s become VERY expensive and even more of a commuter town. The people all seem the same, it’s very homogeneous. My grandparents were immigrants and they managed to come over, work for a year in menial jobs and then buy a four bedroom house. That house recently went on the market for £1m.

It’s a lovely place but I left to go to university 20+ years ago and felt much more at home in larger cities with more diversity and more grit!

AzureBlue99 · 07/11/2023 06:49

Quite a depressing read. Our towns and cities are in massive decline. What the hell can be done about it? Not even sure a change of government would help.

Business rates and rent need to be cut massively to start with. Businesses can't afford to stay open anymore. Better public transport, cheaper car parks

Dacadactyl · 07/11/2023 06:57

My hometown is much like it ever was, but it's very busy, with lots more people than there ever was (particularly immigrants)

There's always been a busy high street in the town and that is still the case.

BitofaStramash · 07/11/2023 07:03

Not a clue I haven't been there since I was 2 and that was a very long time ago.

Cazziebo · 07/11/2023 07:13

No mean city - had a very bad reputation for violence and poor housing and just generally dirty.

Now it's much more multicultural with a thriving arts and entertainment scene and some excellent restaurants. Good for shopping. More of a tourist destination than it has been in the past. Very friendly.

It's going downhill again - manky streets, life sucked out the centre, dreadful homelessness issue.

CheesyChipsOnWembleyWay · 07/11/2023 08:15

It's like polishing a turd. Various new developments - still a shithole.

Peanutcookies · 07/11/2023 08:19

I’m from Hong Kong. I’ve witnessed it’s handover to China, it’s a completely different place now.

Fortunately my parents emigrated so we didn’t witness the political oppression

stephanielittl7 · 07/11/2023 08:52

A shithole. Used to be a lovely market town with loads of shops and a great market. Now its a dump no matter how much its dressed up in fancy new clothes. Its full of drug addicts and doesnt feel safe anymore. And all the local council think we want is pub after pub because every empty building becomes one and its sad.

PackageCount167 · 07/11/2023 08:53

Yes its a dump now, it used to be greener. I remember in Primary school we had to research the history of our town and our town was named after somethi g green and natural....the shops have changed, the house prices are higher, it looks very dreary when I go and visit my parents. Also flytipping is a big issue.

IvorTheEngineDriver · 07/11/2023 09:15

Totally unrecognisable today. Apart from the old town hall, a handful of pubs and 2 churches virtually everything has been redeveloped and replaced with massive new buildings. The last time I went there I recognised virtually nothing.

Oh yes, and the council has bankrupted the place.
