UTI antibiotics question

I have a UTI which was confirmed by a urine test last week (e coli). The GP prescribed me Nitrofurantoin. I had a 3 day course and by the third day it was pretty much gone, but then the day after I finished the course the symptoms came back. It felt as though just a couple more days would have got rid of it completely.

I'm away from home now (seeing family) and in massive pain, drinking water, bicarb, Cystopurin sachets and taking painkillers. I notice that I can get another 3 day course of Nitrofurantoin from Boots online. Could I take this without contacting my GP? It looks like I could pick it up from boots tomorrow morning and I'm desperate to get rid of the pain, but I know we have to be careful with antibiotics.

I would, my Gp told me 3 days is just not enough for a UTI and you should have 7 days

Thanks. Do you think it's ok to take another course so soon after the last one? (Thurs-Sat). It felt like it was so close to working and if it had just been a bit longer it would have been fine.

The infection you gave is now very likely to be resistant to nitirofurantoin. You need a different antibiotic. I would call 111 this evening, or contact your own GP tomorrow (assuming you’re still in the country). They can send a new prescription electronically to any chemist.

For the record, 3 days is plenty for most UTI’s, you’ve been unlucky

Nitrofurantoin is very unlikely to be ineffective for UTI, don't mind that advice from above. You need a longer course, what dosage were you given?

Also try d-mannose from the health food shop, I'm an expert on utis as I've had so many. I rarely get them now thanks to d-mannose.

Best of luck OP, UTIs are the pits

I usually get 7 days for a UTI.

In most cases a 3 day course of antibiotics is recommended to treat uncomplicated urinary tract infections. You need the longer course as your symptoms were resolving but now that you've stopped the nitrofurantoin your symptoms have returned

3 day course is the NICE guidelines these days.

Never long enough for me, the same thing happened to me last week. Day three I felt fine. Day four I was back to square one, I went back on a five day course
