Anyone else allergic to magnesium supplements?

I've tried two different magnesium supplements now - the first one was specifically for sleep but made me jittery and awake as if I'd taken
amphetamines, so I've tried a different brand and this one has made patches of skin on my torso slightly blister and flake off. Has anyone else had a bad reaction to it? It's such a shame as I have digestion problems. sleep issues and anxiety, which it's supposed to aid, so am a bit disappointed that I'm having this reaction.

If anyone has had this, is it worth carrying on until your body gets used to it, or will the side effects continue?

I have to take magnesium and potassium supplements as chemo left me unable to get enough from my food. The hospital could only give me sachets to put in water, which gave me diarrhoea, so I now get tablets from a health food shop which seem to be doing the job for me, and I'm not suffering any ill effects from those.
If you're struggling with oral supplements what about absorbing it through your skin? There are lots of skin creams and sprays you can get, and bath salts containing magnesium or even just Epsom salts in your bath.

I use a skin spray and haven't had any issues. It does sting a bit though.

I'm a bit worried about using a skin spray, as the allergy is manifesting on my skin. Two capsules gave me massive scaly, itchy flaking patches on my skin. I felt like I had ants crawling on me.

Which brand are you taking, out of interest. I'm sure I get enough magnesium from my diet, but had heard it was good for the things I mentioned in my OP. Perhaps there are other supplements that I can take for those things instead.

I'm currently taking 'magnesium malate' at the moment in the hope that it reduces my gallstones. I don't seem to be having a reaction and I have fairly sensitive skin.

Different types of magnesium do different things so I find I have to read around. I mostly take it for sleep so take magnesium glycinate which I tolerate fine but magnesium citrate gives me a proper bad tummy.

I can't stand any type on my skin either

I do tend to find this is one where you get what you pay for as well but it has such a positive impact on my sleep I find it worth it.

DH take it every day, says it makes him feel more energetic. After three days I had diarrhoea and cramps , stopped as soon as I abandoned them. Iron doesn’t suit me either, I’m obviously doomed to sloth.

DilemmaDelilah · 07/11/2023 02:29

@LaDamaDeElche It's a high dose magnesium from Holland and Barrett, more than that I don't know! My DH has taken it upon himself to become 'keeper of all meds' since I got ill, and he decants all my meds into those 7 day morning and evening dispensers.

OP, I can’t take magnesium sulfate. It causes me to go bright red and feel hot. The last time I took it some of the skin on my face lifted off in tiny little bubbles of dry skin (but not a blister) and flaked off over a few days. It looked gross. My allergist saw my skin and told me to stop taking it. Which then meant a trip back to the gastroenterologist who had prescribed it for constipation. My skin cleared up quickly with some prescribed cream

I’m allergic (anaphylaxis) to a few different things. And while this was not my usual anaphylactic symptoms - it wasn’t an anaphylactic type reaction - I’d never take it again.
