Unsafe new dishwasher

Just want to give parents a heads up on a (new to me) design on an integrated dishwasher. I recently brought a KENWOOD KID60S23 Full-size Fully Integrated Dishwasher which opens when finished to help drying. I wrongly assumed it opened slightly as shown on curry's web site, but it in fact fully opens to expose hot contents and easy access to the cutlery basket. Not a great design around toddlers or pets. The door literally falls open with a thud and scares the life out of you. It fell on my dog and now she is petrified of the damn thing, every time we turn it on. I'm just glad a toddler wasn't under it! Needless to say, it is being returned. FYI, the door opening doesn't help to dry contents, it is worse than my old dishwasher that finally gave up after 8 years.

You mean it automatically fully opens when the cycle is complete? I don't have little kids or pets any more but I think I'd find that bizarre and unwelcome as my main food prep area is above the dishwasher so I wouldn't want it opening into me.Confused

InTheRainOnATrain · 06/11/2023 11:43

That’s so weird! I’ve had the ones that open before and it’s usually just a crack? Is it definitely supposed to fully open and it’s not just a dodgy hinge or broken catch?

GatherlyGal · 06/11/2023 11:47

We are looking for a new dishwasher and a few have this feature to finish off the drying cycle. I'm sure it's only meant to open an inch or 2 and I can imagine the door throwing itself open at random would be very bizarre.

I shall avoid so thanks for the heads up.

That seems like a bizarre thing to happen, it'd definitely squash a dog or cat in this house as they like to snooze in front of the dishwasher when it's on. Is it maybe a fault and it is actually only supposed to open a crack?

GoingUpUpUp · 06/11/2023 11:51

Does the door bang down? I’d be inclined to think it’s the fitting. Most just pop open to let the steam out.
Have you checked with Kenwood that it is actually supposed to do that?

Babamamananarama · 06/11/2023 11:55

It sounds like it's fitted incorrectly - possibly the door panel is too heavy? Or the weighting of the door is wrong.

Caspianberg · 06/11/2023 11:57

That sounds like it isn’t fitted correctly. The Miele ones open like this to dry, but they open maybe 5-10cm

hedgehoglurker · 06/11/2023 11:57

I think it is probably a faulty one where the springs in the door have malfunctioned. Dishwasher doors are surprisingly heavy when the springs have gone. Does your manual suggest a maximum weight for the door front, and is yours within that?

TruthSeeker2023 · 06/11/2023 13:29

There's a setting you can change on these if you read in the manual. Your's sounds like it's defautling to the wrong thing tho

Sarahwendywoo · 10/11/2023 14:07

I did try to contact Kenwood but there phone number on the website takes you to a currys call center? When I explained the situation, they just told me to take it back to the store I collected it from and gave me a reference number, they weren't interested in getting it sorted. I have gone through the manual and looked online to see if it is supposed to fully open and can't find anything.... I have seen other brands that open and it does state 10cm or there abouts or has a catch to prevent it opening further, which makes sense. We have tried to adjust the door, but it doesn't change a thing.

What safety concerns should consumers be aware of regarding the design of the KENWOOD KID60S23 Fully Integrated Dishwasher, as described in the user's experience, particularly in relation to toddlers and pets?

Ducksurprise · 23/11/2023 22:59

I've no idea why the above poster posted (AI?)

But I've got a question after reading the thread, does the dishwasher opening (even a little bit) add to dampness in the house?

I'd rather dry my dishes than add to the damp level.

Andthereyougo · 23/11/2023 23:15

My dishwasher is about 9 years old and I switch it off at the end of the cycle ( if I’m around) and leave the door shut. Everything dries except plastic tubs. I can’t see how an opening door is beneficial.
And OP’s definitely sounds dangerous.

RestingCatsArseFace · 23/11/2023 23:32

The new ones have a so called eco design that doesn't dry completely, ours leaves everything wet unless I accidentally catch it just as it reaches the point where the stuff is dry and hot, and open the door. Otherwise it will go steamy and everything gets sweaty and wet again. It is absolute rubbish.

I pull the door open a bit and hang a tea towel over to stop it closing. It's a Bosch Siemens heap of over priced crap. Wanted a cheap basic one but there was nothing available thanks to Covid.

Sarahwendywoo · 24/11/2023 14:33

I think this is an issue with the model as they seemed to be aware of it and had no issues in replacing it.

OP posts:
BarbaraofSeville · 24/11/2023 15:27

We have a Bosch one that does that, but it only opens about 3 inches and emits a little fanfare just before it does it, so hopefully not catching anyone out although it did mess with DPs mind a little because it would be closed and he'd go back in the kitchen a few minutes later and it would be open and he had no idea how it was happening.

isthismylifenow · 24/11/2023 15:44

My Miele does this, but it's on a catch. You have to close the door again to release the catch to fully open.

So this doesn't sound right.

But, I had a Kenwood dishwasher before this Miele. And if you are returning it (as I think you should), consider getting another brand. The Kenwood was dreadful, issue after issue and it didn't clean all that well either. So the fact the door is flying open, doesn't surprise me too much.

Definitely seems like a robot, how odd

BertieBotts · 24/11/2023 16:06

It's broken. Ours does this because the spring in the door has gone. We can't pul it out so we are just careful with it. Luckily it's too old to have the auto pop open when finished thing!

FPS23 · 15/02/2024 16:25

If you read the instructions it tells you how turn off the auto-open door feature. You simply hold down the F and P buttons together when switched on and it stoops the door Fromm opening.

PatBar · 05/04/2024 22:42

I've come across this post because I was having the same issue with my Kenwood integrated dishwasher. I had a look at the manual and there are 2 screws at the bottom that adjust the door tension, these need to be tightened. Once this is done, the door will stay 90 degrees open if you open it fully, but will also stay ajar and won't open 90 degrees when it auto opens. My Kenwood is a slimline dishwasher and the manual says the cupboard door has to be between 5kg and 9kg, if the door is heavier than this it will probably not stay ajar.
Apparently if you want to disable auto open you need to press and hold F (not F and P as this adjusts the salt dispensing), but I haven't tried that so can't comment on the result. Have a look at your manual to get specific information for your model.

BeGiddyDenimBalonz · 08/01/2025 14:31

You can turn this feature off. Press F and P buttons together. Page 14 in the instruction manual tells you this. Tried it and it works a treat.

I know you’ve probably got a new dishwasher by now! But to anybody else that comes across this problem. This is how you disable the door opening at the end of the cycle function. Hope it helps someone.
