How the hell do you keep socks on an 18 month old?!

He pulls them off instantly.

It hasn't bothered me throughout the summer but obviously, it's getting colder so he needs to keep the blimmin' things on.

What say you wise women of MN? 🤔

Tights

familyeleven · 06/11/2023 12:20

Also if they are taking off shoes and you are fed up with losing them, but little ankle boot style ones. Then tie the laces round the back where they can't see them

Needmorelego · 06/11/2023 12:24

@Coffeerum shoes indoors? Why would he be wearing shoes indoors (where I expect much of the sock removal happens).

Another vote for tights

Tights

Sock ons are shit

Mudflaps · 06/11/2023 13:11

Tights. It's 30 years since mine was that age but tights were the only thing that worked. He also spent a lot of time outside 'working' with his grandfather so tights helped keep him warm. Gloves, I gave up on eventually but hats were no problem, he loved them.

Esgaroth · 06/11/2023 13:15

Mine always wore tights under trousers in cold weather as babies and toddlers. Much more practical (and warmer) than socks!

Angrymum22 · 06/11/2023 13:18

DS had an amazing pair of stretch terry dungarees that had feet, they were 6-9mnths but seemed to stretch with him until 12+ months.
They could be worn over or under t-shirts/jumpers and solved the sock problem. Because they were no thicker than socks you could put shoes over them.
Not the most trendy but practically they were 5*

Nursery? Ours wore shoes all day once they moved up into young toddler.

Also, unless you’re really holding out on the heating then it’s not a huge issue if they’re barefoot inside. Additionally, slippers = indoor shoes and much harder to get off than socks!

SusanSHelit · 06/11/2023 13:22

Agree with tights, even for boys. Keeps them warmer anyway under their pants and are impossible for them to get off.

For non walkers, get a cosy toes buggy blanket that has a hidden zip, they don't need socks with one of those

Have you not met many 18 month olds? I've yet to meet one that didn't try, mostly successfully, to take off their shoes, socks, gloves, hats and even their nappies. It's hardly an unusual occurrence.

Yep, my 13mo has been in shoes for a while because he was walking at 10 months and he very quickly figured out how to get those and then socks off. My advice is, always carry extra pairs anywhere you go because lost socks are inevitable 😆

At 18 months how does he pull them off, does he not wear shoes?

He's actually been pulling them off since he was about a year old. He pulls them off about 700 times per day 😫

Loving the suggestions, especially the funny ones (concrete)!

MN is Excellent for this stuff. Honestly, you guys sometimes point out the most obvious stuff to me (tights) that has just somehow passed me by. Instant life improvers. I'll check out the sock on thingies too.

Thanks all!

Can't say my toddler has ever pulled her shoes and socks off outside, nor her nappy.
And if you are just in your own home what is the big deal about socks being off?

JollyJellyCat · 06/11/2023 14:32

Sock ons are just sacrificial ime. They come off first then the socks follow and you have four things to put back on.

Tights are the answer.

GigiAnnna · 06/11/2023 14:33

Always used tights, even if they're meant for girls it doesn't matter. Boys can have extra warm legs too.

Needmorelego · 06/11/2023 14:39

@Coffeerum socks indoors....errr...to keep feet warm I would assume 🤔

I get that yours didn't do it but surely you must be aware that just because yours didn't, obviously many others do??

Personally the floors in my house are quite chilly at this time of year, as I am sure they are in many other homes and therefore having something on their feet will mean the child is not getting cold toes. It's hardly some great mystery?

Not in my experience. It’s important to make sure you get the right size though.

I found them brilliant.

Daisybuttercup12345 · 06/11/2023 16:57

Tights under trousers. Look like socks anyway.

Balloonhearts · 06/11/2023 17:01

You don't. They will always find a way. Babygro with feet under their clothes or put tights on him under his trousers that have feet in them. I think my nan used to sew socks to the bottom of my leggings as a baby.

Do you expect him to wear shoes 24 hours a day?

riffraffroff · 19/11/2023 19:41

OP I've invested in tights for DS and can confirm they work. Also hilarious watching him tank them and really not understand why they're not coming off 😂

Also there's a trio of socks from John Lewis, they're quite long so they've got resistance. However what really seems to work is they've got dino faces on them. Once I pointed that out he was far more accommodating of them

PerspiringElizabeth · 19/11/2023 19:42

Another vote for tights or footed leggings/joggers. DSs lived in footed leggings at that age.

Gnomegnomegnome · 19/11/2023 19:44

All of mine (daughters and sons) wore tights in the winter.

BettyOBarley · 19/11/2023 19:51

I came to say sock ons - brilliant things!
