I'm posting in chat for traffic. Would absolutely love to hear some positive stories of having a baby after 42...I'm nearly a year into TTC my second, and had a miscarriage at 9/10 weeks in July. No sniff of a BFP since then.

Please come cheer me up :)

I had DS2 at 45. Two years previously I had an ectopic pregnancy which resulted in me having a Fallopian tube removed. Somehow I still managed to conceive, although it took about 18 months!

My youngest was born when I was 42. She is lovely.

I gave birth at 42. I'd been trying to conceive for 2 years roughly

My son (my first and only child) was born 2 days before my 43rd birthday. However he was conceived via IVF as we had TTC naturally for a year prior without success (I had one chemical) and IUI had also failed. That’s probably not what you want to hear, but on the positive side we were able to use my eggs and, all in all, the IVF was a fairly painless experience- it worked on the second round. I had no fertility issues other than maternal age. The pregnancy was very straightforward, as was the birth. It wasn’t as expensive as I had heard it could be either.

So I’d say seek help without delay. Best of luck.

On the other hand, I always thought about Cherie Blair having Leo by accident at 46 to give me hope! I read that the actor Stephen Mangan’s wife also fell pregnant, unplanned, at the same age.

I had DC1 at 39. I never went back on birth control but didn't start seriously trying until I was 41 (DH wasn't quite ready before then & besides of which he didn't believe that it got harder to conceive as you got older because of Janet Jackson & the like). I didn't get a single BFP until I was 44, but it was a smooth pregnancy & DC2 was born healthy a few months after I turned 45. I had given up hope a few months before I got my positive test, assumed contraception was pointless & unnecessary and was shocked, delighted and then worried about miscarriage and/or that there would be something wrong with the baby (higher risks with older mothers and all that). I worried unnecessarily. He's over a year old now and he's fine, healthy, hit all his milestones so far etc. I'm the oldest natural pregnancy that I know of personally (i.e. not famous people) but I have friends who had successful pregnancies at 40, 42 & 44 (one planned, one much wanted but unexpected after 7 years of trying and one assumed it was menopause but it wasn't). Best of luck OP xx

Thank you all, this has really helped. I have done the standard fertility tests (AMH, FSH, etc) and now awaiting results...I don't want to go down the IVF route, but hoping that as I did get pregnant earlier this year it's just a case of time/one good enough egg.

I had DC3 at 42, conceived age 41. I'd got pg at 41 earlier that year but had to have TFMR for genetic issues. We had a NIPT so it was detected quite early. No miscarriages. I didn't have any fertility treatment and by that stage I'd given up a bit and wasn't tracking ovulation or taking conception vitamins etc. And we weren't trying very often due to tiredness/poor sleep.

I had an easy pregnancy but I did have gestational diabetes, but had no symptoms, but dc3 was a pound heavier than dc2 when born. Had an elcs so it didn't make much difference anyway. DC3 was unaffected.

Had a miscarriage at 41 then fell pregnant soon after and healthy baby, my second, when I was 42. No issues, wonderful child.

DifficultBloodyWoman · 07/11/2023 11:26

Multiple miscarriages and failed IVF followed by a successful spontaneous pregnancy at 43.

Nongatron · 07/11/2023 11:32

Hi OP I had my DC at 43. No problem with the pregnancy. Wonderful child. I had previously had chemotherapy for cancer so to say we were surprised would be an understatement! I did have a lot of acupuncture ( not trying to ttc) and I do wonder if that helped. All the best to you 😊

Dinosaurdrip · 07/11/2023 12:01

I had surprise DC 4 at 42. She is nearly 10 months old. Pregnancy was no worse that my other 3 really. Actually finding looking after a baby easier this time around, probably due to a 10 year gap and helpful siblings. Also DH and I both WFH, which is so much better for us.

Yes. My doctor was really struggling not to use the word ‘miracle’! 😂
