Mead making - what equipment do I need?

I know you can buy kits online but they seem expensive. What kit is actually essential and do you have any helpful advice?!

A fermenting vessel, usually a glass demi john. You used to be able to buy them at Wilko, not sure if the new online store sells them yet. Milton for sterilising. Airlock with bung, hydrometer.

I enjoy homebrewing, havent done it in a while but mead is on the list!

I'm currently attempting red wine from the surprise grapes from the back garden (planted a vine to cover the fence, didn't imagine it would actually bear fruit!! In the interests of accuracy I should add that it ended up being about 10% my grapes and 90% red grape juice from Sainsbury's, because it turns out you need a LOT of grapes to make a gallon of wine 😆)

But anyway....the beautifully named bigger jugs.com is your friend. They have all the wine making kit at decent prices.

You will need: a lidded, clean bucket for initial fermentation.
A glass demijohn with a rubber bung with an airtrap in for ongoing fermentation.
Sodium metabisulphite tablets (Campden tablets) for sterilising everything.
Yeast- you might be able to get a specific mead yeast, if not I think I've heard sherry yeast mentioned for mead 🤔
A funnel (but I used a plastic water bottle cut in half).
That's the fermentation bit sorted, then in a few months when it's stopped fermenting and is ready to bottle, you will need wine bottles (preferably clear, start collecting them now), corks and some kind of corking device, and some clear tubing for siphoning.

I made some mead ages ago and it was really delicious! It was much dryer than commercial mead- which I find pretty sickly- and very strong!!

What honey are you using? (I just used bog standard honey from ASDA).

You're making me want to make some more now!

If by any chance you're in Cornwall I've got some glass demijohns I'm trying to get shot of by the way.

Regarding yeast - I usually use a Champagne yeast.

Thanks all! Not sure what honey I'm going to use yet, maybe something organic?!
