Menstrual migraines

I’ve been getting menstrual migraines and effectively lost a day and half with the headache and the following 2 days with the hangover. I checked out Sumatriptan but the long list of side effects worry me. Is Sumatriptan the only option?

I take sumatriptan for ten and it's a game changer. Very expensive to buy though. Will get it on prescription next time I see my GP.

Thank @Toddlerteaplease I’ll book an appointment with the gp

I'm waiting for my order of sumatriptan to see if they'll work. If they do, I'll try and get them from my GP.
Migraine completely incapacitates me.

I used to get menstrual migraines- I get a diary and they would cluster monthly. Going onto the Cerelle contraceptive pill was a game changer- went from having up to 3 a week (even on beta blockers) to none for the last 3 years. I would also recommend getting your blood pressure checked as I'm not sure if that was also a factor.

jennylamb1 · 05/11/2023 23:19

sumatriptan is ok, but I would recommend addressing the triggers rather than trying to manage the symptoms, as we all know that once you have the migraine it can wipe the day and the next day out.

I suffer too and was recommended some type of magnesium but never tried it, I take pill and take packs back to back for 2/3 months to reduce the frequency as discussed with my gp

blackheartsgirl · 05/11/2023 23:32

I used to suffer terribly with these every month, I honestly thought it was my menstrual cycle as I’ve always had a headache the day I come on anyway but for about a year omg it was awful. The migraine I started having half way through my cycle were bad.

then I had my blood pressure checked, put on tablets and not had one since.

Notjustamum28 · 05/11/2023 23:33

works for me, i have it in an epi pen type thing and inject it, as migraines can be so severe, and its fast acting. Im not allowed any form of hormonal drug/contrceptive (long story/blood clots) so find triptans work best for me.

Morewineplease10 · 05/11/2023 23:57

I get this too. 3 days most months, but not always. Otherwise I get normal headaches but not the same and the pattern is crystal clear.

Nurofen migraine pills work far better and for longer than regular paracetamol.

Namechangedb4 · 06/11/2023 00:06

I’ve tracked my migraine- it always occurs either the 3rd or 5th day of the cycle.
my eye hurt as part of the headache- like a cluster headache.

checked my blood pressure and it was in the normal range. I take paracetamol but think need something stronger.

And it’s like clockwork- happens every month.

I take sumatriptan at the first sign of a migraine. It's good stuff! It can clear a migraine in an hour.

CoffeeBeansGalore · 06/11/2023 00:46

My old gp recommended high dose complex vitamin B to help with hormonal headaches/migraines. I take one daily and rarely get migraines now.

CoffeeBeansGalore · 06/11/2023 00:48

These are the ones I get.

I used to get them. 3 days before period finishing 3 days afyer. Nothing stopped them. It was awful. Always in my left side of face behind eye all the way down to my jaw. I was 43 when I went onto hrt. Hrt stopped them...it's the only symptom they have helped with but its worth it for that alone. Its the drop in hormones causing it I believe. Depending on your age, I'd ask the gp
