Childhood Food: Chukky Eggs

I grew up in the north-east of England, banks of the Tyne near to Newcastle. When I was little - say 3-about 7, I remember my dad used to make me a 'chukky egg' for my tea if my mam was out. It was a slightly soft boiled egg chopped up with salt, pepper and butter and served with hot buttered toast cut into soldiers. It was delicious. My dad used to call me his 'little chukky egg' as well. Not sure if it's a north-east thing. I make them for our DC now and they love them too. For me part of it is the memory of my dad .

Anyone else have a 'chukky egg' for tea? Or any other childhood meals you remember fondly?

@ForfarBridie ok I'm trying this when I next buy eggs thanks 😊

imnottoofussed · 05/11/2023 19:47

Also just for anyone who hasn't tried this you really should. To reiterate it's a boiled egg you put the egg in a mug and put butter and salt/pepper and mush it up and eat with or without toast. Completely different to a dippy egg.

ForfarBridie · 05/11/2023 20:00

And the egg can be boiled as hard or as soft or medium as you like. My preference is hard enough for there to be some soft yoke left.

We had Chucky Eggs - was from near Liverpool.

We used to get called little Chucky eggs, too!

JimnJoyce · 05/11/2023 20:03

Brought up in Birmingham and chucky eggs were just boiled eggs

LakeTiticaca · 05/11/2023 20:04

Sabien · 05/11/2023 20:14

Scottish mum - also egg in a cup. Lush! Definitely having for lunch tomorrow 😋.

Imisscoffee2021 · 05/11/2023 20:17

North Easterner and yes my mam used to make chukky eggs, which were soft boiled eggs with a bit of butter on and dipped with toast soldiers :)

FrodisCapering · 05/11/2023 20:19

Chucky eggs were just what we called eggs in general. The thing you're referring to was called "egg in a cup".
North West (West Lancashire).

FinnJuhl · 05/11/2023 20:25

Also NW here: both chucky eggs and bobby eggs were local terms for boiled eggs.

Egg in a Cup was a special treat when you were really ill in bed.

NotMyDayJob · 05/11/2023 20:26

My mum's from the north east and always calls me her little Chucky egg (I am mid 40s and she still does) she never made this as she herself doesn't like eggs. I never knew why and now I do! Thanks OP this is a lovely memory

Aw yes. Chucky egg in Manchester. Had a small tin cup mum used for this specifically.

Desu · 05/11/2023 21:06

Definitely from the 1980s computer game, which I use to play aged about 13. On the off chance, were you born around 1980 or so? If so, your dads were playing it!

Desu · 05/11/2023 21:07

ps we played Chucky egg around 1986 for precise context :-)

MainlyOnThePlain · 05/11/2023 21:17

My mum used to call it a Christopher Robin egg - soft boiled eggs chopped up with heavily buttered bread, salt and pepper, and extra butter. Served up when we were ill, or got into that toddler-ish 'cutted-up pear' state of being hungry but hating all options offered.

Guggy egg in parts of Ireland.

Feduppluckingmychinhairs · 05/11/2023 21:49

Yes guggy eggs where I come from in Ireland

WWGDD · 05/11/2023 21:52

This is a computer game for me

Gingerkittykat · 05/11/2023 22:14

Egg in a cup in central Scotland.

I've not had one for years and want one now.

ShutTheDoorBabe · 05/11/2023 22:16

I'm from Yorkshire and my mam always called eggs, of any kind, chucky eggs.

ShutTheDoorBabe · 05/11/2023 22:17

When I make boiled eggs now, I put salt and pepper on the toast before cutting it into soldiers so that each part of the eggsperience is properly seasoned. I just call them boiled eggs.

bellac11 · 05/11/2023 22:20

Born and brought up in London, this didnt have a name as such, my mum would mash up soft boiled egg with butter and salt and pepper

Only later when I started to go to other children's houses and have a 'egg sandwich' did I realise that other people mashed up egg with mayo or salad cream, I think I was nearly sick the first time I tasted such an abomination

Butter all the way!
